And so, we've decided to fund camp ourselves.
We represent a group of volunteers, parents, and former campers who want to keep camp going. Camp is important to us all. This camp is a wonderful experience for the kids. Campers are often quoted as saying camp is "better than Christmas," and the week they most look forward to all year. It's the one place they can be with other kids who are dealing with similar experiences, and just have fun and be kids. For volunteers, it's a challenging but amazing experience, where they get to know these special kids and other big-hearted volunteers. The respite camp provides for families is also vitally important.
We are asking for donations to pay for camp. We estimate that camp will cost over $2,000 per camper. We will need to pay for liability insurance, camp ground fees, activities, meals and lodging. As a long-term solution, we hope to form a 501c3 non-profit corporation with the goal of sustaining camp year after year, and perhaps, if there is enough support, providing other important services to people with nerve and muscle disease in Hawai‘i.
Our current goal is to raise at least $16,000 to continue our camp for 2018, to provide the needed resources for at least 7 campers, plus volunteers and medical staff. We want to keep camp the way it has been - or maybe even better.
Every dollar raised will go towards funding a 2018 Summer Camp on O'ahu for the keiki that are so important to us, and towards making sure we have camp in the future.
Please donate, and help us save camp!
