Save Kyle's Van

Donation protected
TLDR; Kyle Kesterson's van broke down on the drive to the Sandbox Summit in July and is facing a $7,595 towing and repair bill, needed immediately, or the shop impounds the van for sitting. Let's return all the love he's shown us and support him with a contribution.

Dear beautiful friends new and old,

As you may or may not have heard, Kyle suffered significant and costly van troubles on his way to the Sandbox retreat this summer in Northern California. (Details below)

Over the years, Kyle has made tremendous, unique contributions to the Sandbox community and to the Summit weekend event in particular.

At every major Sandbox event, Kyle captures stunning photography and shares it with the community (including doing portraits for each of the 300 attendees at the 2017 Croatia summit). He was back at it again during the Summit weekend, stepping out of moments to make sure they were captured for us. And his love follows everything he does for Sandbox, from the way he shows up for each member to keeping us on track with cleaning and ensuring we live up to our values.

**Example: A collection of Kyle's Summit images from Croatia, Kenya, and California**

Outside of photography, Kyle spent many months on the Summit organizing team, helping project manage the Kenya Summit. With all that Kyle has done as part of our community, we'd love it if we could show up for him now. We'd like to take up a quick collection for them to help defray his unexpected and inhibitive costs and, more importantly, to show that we are with him in the challenges he's facing.

Support to date:
When we learned that both Kyle (and Nico's) vans broke down on the way to the Summit and were needing towing and repair, we took up an initial donation from Summit attendees, raising $1,300, which got split evenly between them two. $650 has been applied to Kyle's bill.

Details on the van's diagnostic:
The clutch had an internal failure, making the van inoperable. Due to the van being a manual transmission, the warranty doesn't cover anything relating to the clutch. The van is currently at Steven's Creek RAM dealership in San Jose, California.

Below is a repair order breakdown of the parts and fees associated:

**UPDATE 9/30**
After speaking with the shop's supervisor and demanding to see transparency in the shop's charges vs the cost of parts, it came to light that the original technician was grossly overstating hours with above normal rates, which is called Price Gouging. The supervisor removed $1,200 from the bill.

- The updated total for parts, labor, and tax: $6,200
- Towing and retrieval costs: $450
- Original Summit donations raised: -$650

Remaining Total: $5,988

The van's parts have now been authorized to order, and is stated to be fixed by 10/4. Kyle will be heading to San Francisco 10/8 to pick up and pay for the van.

To keep things simple, Brandon Kaufer and I volunteer to manage this GoFundMe to collect contributions and make sure they get delivered to Kyle. I know he could use the funds given the expense of towing and repairs he's already incurred, so let's jump on this opportunity now! Please feel free to contribute what you can, but it would be beautiful to see 100% participation. Message me with any questions.
