Jose will beat Duchenne!
Jose was born on March 12th, 2001, he is currently 16 years old. At the age of 6, Jose was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
As a younger boy, Jose would play, like any other child his age - he would run, jump, and practice Karate.
At the age of 9, the disease started affecting his legs, and he had to be placed in a wheel chair; that is when his father, abandoned him and his mother (Alejandra).
Despite lifes struggles, Jose has faced these difficulties with the best attitude and a constant smile.
The disease now has affected his arms, losing some mobility - which is very hard on him, because not only is he an excellent painter; but that is one of his dreams.
Jose attends school, every day; and was just awarded a Honorable Student Award, by Guatemala City's Mayor - Alvaro Arzu. Jose has to embark in swimming lessons on a daily basis, to strengthen his weak muscles; and on top of that, accompanies his mother to nightly University courses.
Joses biggest dream, besides becoming a painter, is to become a Pastor, to share the word of God, and to tell people that God loves everyone.
Last year, the EXON SKIPPING treament was approved, and it is extremely expensive! It averages $300K yearly.
