Please! I desperately need your help with these precious fur babies.
Meet Mama (originally named Maeve) and little Winnie (originally Jasmine). Winnie is not Mama’s biological pup, but they have bonded as closely as if she was. I rescued these two precious fur babies this past week out of a high-kill shelter where, when their time is up, they are euthanized by heart stick (they get a max of 7 days only, more often less, no matter how many or few animals are in the 40 dog/20 cat facility). Thursday there is known to local rescuers who try to save as many as they can, as “Death Day”. In this shelter, as well as many others across the southern US, they are euthanized by intracardiac lethal injection, or heart stick, a brutal, extremely painful and inhumane way of killing cats and dogs - illegal in the majority of states, and for good reason. A needle and syringe containing sodium pentobarbital (which burns like acid) is pounded through the chest wall and several layers of muscle into the animal’s heart. It’s illegal in most states, but not everywhere. In some states, they choose this method because it saves tax dollars. In addition, the animals here don’t get even the most basic vet care, even for obvious wounds, pain or illness, or ever see the light of day despite the fact that there are outdoor runs and a large yard. Donated beds are piled unused against a wall. Less to clean that way.
I was asked to help and after finding out even more (yes it’s even worse than what you’ve read so far) I found it literally impossible to turn my back on these sweet dogs, despite what I knew could be a challenging situation in my present circumstances.
When they got to me, they were in way worse shape than I expected, however. Crawling with fleas, infested with heavy loads of contagious hookworm, anemic, seriously underweight, crummy teeth (Mama), suffering from infections, diarrhea, ear mites and nearly feral, not house or leash trained, but despite all this, still incredibly sweet and craving nothing more than love and affection and a little kindness.
Just when i thought things were bad enough, just today I received the worse news of all that Mama is heart worm positive. This means not only do they both need to recover from everything they've (already)
been through, the mounting bills for antibiotics and steroids needed before they are healthy enough to be spayed, (another hefty future expense), now Mama must first begin several months if not more, of extremely expensive and exhaustive heart worm treatment, which includes xrays, injections and retesting each month before her heart is even strong enough to survive her spay surgery.
We managed to get a nominal amount of money from kind people who pledged to the rescue that tagged them to keep them safe, but the total didn’t come close to covering even a third of the initial vet visit. This has stretched me to the max, both physically, and financially as I struggle to balance this with also caring for my parents and infant daughter in the wake of a house fire than cost us everything, but I cannot find it within myself to allow these dogs to be betrayed by humans yet again. I need to raise a significant amount of money to cover the significant vet bills ahead and at least some help with, at minimum, rudimentary training (trainers here are super expensive even for basics, but I need an expert for these dogs) and socialization.
I’ll admit to feeling overwhelmed right now, and worried sick about how I’m going to provide the medical care they need, but I’m not sorry that I saved these precious angels from the horrific, barbaric fate that awaited them. That said, I need your help. I’m not above begging, not for myself, but for them. They deserve ever so much more than the human race has shown them so far. Please help me show them that there are kind and generous people in this world that have a deep love for animals.
No donation is too small, and I implore you to please, share this fundraiser also and be part of a miracle for these sweet dogs. I pray that you will find it in your heart to help sweet Mama and precious Winnie.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Really.
