In the last year+, The Black Box – against all odds – has made remarkable strides as the area’s incubator of new and under-produced works by world-class writers. We are excited to announce that we are now open for the 2023 Season just one block down and across the street at 8 East Palisade Avenue!
We are extremely grateful for the ongoing, amazing efforts of our supporters and core team who have done everything possible to help throughout this adjustment, and we remain committed to our art, artists, audiences, and our re-growing student base throughout this immediate area.
Select special events, staged readings, and fundraisers are being announced as we settle into our new space. Meanwhile, Eric Bogosian's 1+1 (the very first piece incubated at The Black Box starting back in November '21) will open a fully-intact transfer into NYC for an Off-Broadway run at The Soho Playhouse starting on February 23rd. Throughout '23, The Black Box hopes to offer approximately at least eight fully-realized productions as well as select NYC transfers, workshops, readings, special events, and unique performances from artists-in-residence like percussionist/filmmaker Billy Martin, actress/director Danielle Ferland, and comedian Mark Riccadonna.

About The Black Box
The Black Box - Northern NJ's only professional theater/performing arts school combo - pivoted during the pandemic to become a prime incubator for new and under-produced works by world-class artists. In 2022, we began developing Eric Bogosian's 1+1 in NJ in November 2021; it received a Special NYC Premiere this past July, and an Off-Broadway premiere begins on February 23rd. Additionally, The Black Box's '21-'22 season included The Cleopatra Club by legendary filmmaker Paul Schrader, Ode to Joy by Broadway's Craig Lucas, the world premiere production of Exposed by Beth Henley, as well as short works by John Guare and Caridad Svich.
Our performing arts school, Black Box Studios (est. 2007), currently serves over 200 students per week of all ages and backgrounds, both within our Palisade Avenue space and in select area schools. Partnerships with Englewood's POP program and other local institutions, such as The Englewood Public Library, enable diverse populations - kids, teens, adults, senior citizens, and those considered "on the spectrum" - to take advantage of our unique class offerings, private lessons, workshops, and more.
