Willie is a 5-year-old terrier rescue who has become far more than a pet to Bryan, a Marine combat veteran. In just 9 months, Willie has become a constant source of emotional support, comfort, and stability for a man who has sacrificed much for his country.

During a personal outing on the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Coast, Willie fell from a boat while Bryan was trying to avoid an accident. Although Willie was wearing a life preserver and only fell a couple of feet, the impact was devastating. He broke both of his left legs.

Willie was rushed to an emergency veterinarian in Volusia County, where Bryan was told that Willie needed immediate orthopedic surgery. Both legs require plates and screws, and the total cost of care is expected to be around $14,000.

Bryan has already paid $2,000 out of pocket, and Willie is currently in surgery. Putting him down was never an option. Willie is family.

Bryan is a Marine veteran who served in combat in Iraq. He was active during the invasion of Fallujah and was involved in the rescue of Jessica Lynch. Like many combat veterans, Bryan lives with severe PTSD. Willie has become an important emotional support companion in his daily life. He has a remarkable sense for when Bryan is heading into a mental health episode, and he responds with a kind of empathy and presence that only a deeply bonded companion can provide.

Willie is extroverted, caring, and compassionate. He brings light into dark moments and has become a steady source of comfort during a very difficult chapter in Bryan’s life. Bryan is also dealing with major family and living situation changes, making this emergency even more overwhelming.

Willie’s surgery is happening, but the financial burden is enormous. Recovery is expected to take 2 to 3 months and will include rehabilitation and follow-up care. We are asking for help to cover the cost of surgery and the care Willie will need to heal.
