Wildlife is being euthanized not because it can’t be saved — but because there is nowhere safe to put it.

Wild Earth Conservancy is a conservation nonprofit building a non-invasive Wildlife Rehabilitation Eco-Village in North Carolina, and right now, animals are being lost simply because a critical piece of infrastructure does not exist: a dedicated, biosecure quarantine facility.

Every year, injured and orphaned wildlife are turned away or euthanized — not because they are beyond help, but because safe care requires proper quarantine space and vaccinated, trained staff. Without that infrastructure, animals deemed “high risk” are often denied care outright.

A young fox arrives after being struck by a car. He’s disoriented, circling, and unable to stand properly — symptoms that could indicate head trauma, toxin exposure, or rabies. Without a quarantine building and vaccinated staff, there is no safe way to observe and assess him. In many cases, animals like this are euthanized immediately, not because they cannot recover, but because there is nowhere safe to place them.

This is especially true for rabies vector species — raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. The majority of these animals brought to rehabilitators are not rabid, yet without quarantine facilities, fear and lack of resources — not science or compassion — often dictate their fate.

The same is now happening with waterfowl and raptors as avian influenza (bird flu) continues to spread. Without quarantine, these animals cannot be safely treated, placing other wildlife, staff, and surrounding communities at risk.

A dedicated quarantine facility changes everything. It allows us to safely isolate, observe, and treat animals that would otherwise be lost. Some will go on to be released back into the wild. Others — like a fox left with permanent neurological damage or a habituated skunk — may find permanent, humane homes as education ambassadors, helping communities better understand wildlife and coexistence.

We are raising funds to build this life-saving quarantine facility, so animals no longer have to die simply because the safest option doesn’t exist — and so every injured, orphaned, or high-risk animal that comes to us is given a fair chance to survive, heal, and thrive.

What Your Donation Does:
• $25 provides PPE and sanitation for quarantine care
• $50 supports daily biosecure housing for one animal
• $100 builds a portion of a secure quarantine enclosure
• Every dollar moves us closer to treating animals that would otherwise be lost
