Help Indian Cove Neighbors Save a Crucial Wildlife Corridor and Protect Rural Neighborhoods near Joshua Tree National Park in Twentynine Palms
Why We Need Your Help
In July 2025, the City of Twentynine Palms approved the Ofland Hotel, a luxury glamping resort with 100 cabins and a public restaurant, without requiring a full environmental review. To make this possible, the City rezoned a rural residential parcel near the border of Joshua Tree National Park into commercial land.
This dangerous spot zoning decision threatens not only the fragile wildlife corridor used by endangered species like the desert tortoise in Indian Cove but also the future of every residential neighborhood in Twentynine Palms. If the City can rezone one parcel without thorough study or community input, it can happen anywhere in our City.
What We’re Doing About It
We, the Indian Cove Neighbors, have joined the Center for Biological Diversity in litigation against the City of Twentynine Palms and Ofland resort. Our lawsuit demands:
- A full Environmental Impact Report to assess harms to wildlife, water, and open space.
- An end to spot zoning that favors one developer over the community.
- A return to proper planning and zoning laws that protect residents and our desert environment.
Why It Matters
We are not against development. We welcome new projects in properly zoned areas. But rezoning rural residential land half a mile from Joshua Tree National Park for a luxury resort sets a precedent that threatens rural living, endangered species, and the starry night skies that define the Mojave desert.
How You Can Help
The Center for Biological Diversity is using their existing resources to focus their end of the lawsuit on protecting the species. However, Indian Cove Neighbors must raise funds to co-litigate the land use issues at an estimated cost of $35,000.
We cannot do this alone.
Your donation will:
- Help cover legal fees for land use issues such as zoning.
- Support residents standing up for fair and transparent city planning.
- Protect rural neighborhoods across Twentynine Palms from reckless spot zoning.
- Help us advocate for consideration of our fragile desert ecology in city planning.
Who We Are
Indian Cove Neighbors is a grassroots coalition of neighbors in Indian Cove and beyond, united to protect:
- The rural quality of our neighborhoods
- Our dark skies and desert wildlife.
- The integrity of our City’s General Plan.
Note: While Say No to Ofland was crucial in spreading the word about the Ofland Hotel, we felt it best that Indian Cove Neighbors assume responsibility for the litigation. Kulturspace Foundation / Save Our Deserts has kindly agreed to as act as the fiscal sponsor for Indian Cove Neighbors.
