How did we get here?

It’s the kind of situation only a dreamer can end up in. We fell in love with this house the first time we saw it. It was tired and forgotten, but we saw its beauty. I knew — with my bare hands, with time and love — I could bring it back to life.

In 2022, we planned to apply for a mortgage. But after the war began, as Russian citizens, we were banned from opening any new bank accounts or processing financial transactions in Europe. Still, we refused to let go of the dream.

Together with our lawyer, we arranged a rent-to-buy contract with the owner. We paid a large sum on the day we signed, then agreed to monthly payments that would count toward the final purchase. The plan was to close the deal in August 2025, by paying the final amount. We believed — hoped — the war would end, and that mortgage options would reopen by then.

But last week, our bank gave us a final answer: no. No mortgage. No financing. That means we now have to find €50,000 in just two months — or we lose the home and everything we’ve built with our own hands.
