Courage in Kyiv
During a recent visit to Kyiv with fellow Harvard University students and alumni, I had the profound privilege of visiting a shelter operated by Save Ukraine, where I met children who had been abducted by Russia and courageously rescued by this extraordinary group.
Save Ukraine is the only public organization in Ukraine that regularly organizes and successfully conducts rescue missions to return Ukrainian children who have endured systematic family separation, religious persecution, forced militarization, and sexual exploitation. These children are punished for speaking Ukrainian and told their families are dead—all to erase their history and identity.
The Remarkable Resilience of Children
What I found most deeply moving was the incredible resilience of these young survivors. Despite severe trauma, joy finds a way to emerge. Children swung daringly on playground equipment and kicked soccer balls with boundless energy. A mother gently pushed her newborn twin girls in a stroller outside while the Program Director tickled their bellies, drawing bright smiles and giggles.
A boy with Down Syndrome approached me with pure joy, offering an enthusiastic high five that reminded me of a fundamental truth: all people—especially children—yearn for the same things: safety, peace, education, freedom to be with family, and hope for the future.
Hope Persists Even in Wartime
Life continues its precious rhythm even against the backdrop of war. How we respond to such hardship reveals our humanity. How we come together as a community to help heal trauma demonstrates that compassion can triumph over cruelty.
Save Ukraine operates with steadfast commitment to remain neutral, providing aid based solely on humanitarian need, free from external influence. Their dedicated staff are among the most committed, professional, and empathetic individuals I've ever met.
Comprehensive Support for Recovery
To maximize each child's potential for successful reintegration, Save Ukraine provides:
- Comprehensive educational support and specialized programming
- Professional mental health services and trauma-informed counseling
- Safe, nurturing housing and shelter facilities
- Dedicated family reunification efforts
- Programs to help children preserve and reclaim their cultural identity
Critical Need for Support
Beyond the children I met at the shelter, countless others remain trapped, waiting for rescue. Save Ukraine urgently needs funding for the dangerous rescue missions themselves—operations requiring extensive resources to safely extract children from harm.
They also need support for expanding on-site services including a dedicated justice and protection centre for children affected by sexual violence and human trafficking, as well as housing for foster families, plus ongoing reintegration services—the sustained care that helps each child heal and rebuild over months and years.
Our Goal and Commitment
I'm establishing an initial fundraising goal of $10,000 to directly support Save Ukraine's life-saving work, followed by ongoing community initiatives focused on storytelling and advocacy.
Every dollar contributed will directly support:
- Life-saving rescue missions to reach children still in danger
- Critical ongoing reintegration services that span months and years
- Comprehensive trauma-informed care and healing
- Expansion of mental health services
- Creation of safe environments where children can recover and thrive
