On Friday, Trinity stopped eating and had eaten her last full meal at 2 pm. On Saturday, we called the vet and let them know she hadn't eaten for the past 24 hours. They urged us to come in. After getting lab work done and X-rays, we still didn't have an answer for why she wasn't eating. They sent her home with pain medication (Gabapentin) and an appetite stimulant (Mirtaz) after giving her SQ fluids and Famotidine for potential acid reflux. We attempted to give her the Gabapentin, but she refused it. We applied the Mirtaz on her ear, but her appetite didn't increase.
After two more days without eating a full meal, we called the vet again to say she still hasn't eaten, and the medicine wasn't working. They recommended that we bring her in overnight for monitoring and more fluids. We couldn't afford to do that, so we brought her in as early as we could to see the sonographer for an ultrasound to see if that showed anything new that the X-rays or labs weren't able to catch. After the ultrasound came back normal, each doctor was at a complete loss as to what could be causing her lack of appetite and potential pain. They gave her more SQ fluids and a Butorphanol injection to relieve pain since she refused the Gabapentin.
If she doesn't eat a full meal for another day, the doctor urges us to hospitalize her so they can save her liver from failing. We have already spent over $2400 to still know nothing, and hospitalization will cost us thousands more. Anything helps us to make sure our dear Trinity gets the hospitalization she needs so that we can keep her with us.
