For months, villagers in northern Rakhine State in Myanmar have been cut off from humanitarian aid and markets due to heavy fighting between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar Army. The current humanitarian crisis is the worst in the area since the mass genocidal violence against the Rohingya in 2017.
The situation has intensified significantly in the past week. A phone and internet blackout makes it difficult to understand the present condition of civilians, but we are in touch with many villages in Buthitaung and Maungdaw and know that hunger is spreading.
People are trapped and urgently need food, which is still available for purchase in some places, and we have identified ways to send money to people who cannot afford it and are growing desperate.
We call on relevant authorities to open humanitarian corridors immediately so that aid delivery can resume. In the meantime, please help us fill the gap and send cash assistance to villagers to buy food locally.
Although food prices are much higher than normal, 100 USD is still enough for a family to buy enough rice and a few other items to last a month. We are prioritizing the most vulnerable families and internally displaced people who have had to abandon their own villages and are taking shelter elsewhere.
**Our experienced team has organized community-led fundraisers to reach civilians in hard-to-reach areas in Myanmar since 2017. We cannot post all details here for security reasons. We have been trying to get more photos but it is difficult and risky. You can message me on Twitter/X if you have any questions**
