Saving Toph (seizures & loss of puppies)

Angela Stock & Christa Murrell are raising money to help our friend Christi Leigh’s sweet briard Toph. Toph is almost 3 years old and she is the sweetest, gentlest, most loving briard you can imagine. She was due to have her first litter of puppies this week and we just knew she was going to be the BEST momma. Everything was going smoothly during her entire pregnancy and suddenly the unimaginable happened. Last week Toph had a seizure and was rushed to the vet in Los Lunas Animal Clinic in NM. For several days she was in their care and despite numerous tests, they have not been able to find a cause for the sudden seizures. Her health was declining and the seizures were becoming more frequent so the vet performed an emergency C-section late Thursday night in hopes of saving both Toph and her puppies. There were 3 live puppies in her left horn and 1 that was dead in the right horn. After they were removed Toph miraculously stabilized. The 3 live puppies were put into incubators with oxygen where they were monitored and cared for overnight by the staff. We all had high hopes but were given the unbearable news that the puppies did not make it and the last one had passed at 6 am Friday. The silver lining is that Toph is still alive and has a fighting chance. Over the weekend she has been very weak but is slowly recovering. She has still had a couple of seizures but they are not as frequent or intense as the ones she had while the puppies were still in her womb. The vets are still unsure as to what is causing this and if it will subside. Some tests were unsafe to perform while she was pregnant and Christi is hoping to have those done. The bills so far are very substantial and Angela and I are raising money to help fund Toph’s future care at the vet until she can fully recover. All donations, big or small, are greatly appreciated and will go directly to Toph’s treatment. Even a single dollar adds up and can help this sweet girl. ***UPDATE 3/13: Christi said that Toph is improving and might be able to come home later this week. The vet switched her from IV meds to oral meds and waiting to see how that goes. She is still pushing to find an answer to why this happened.
