Cornwall Council has just announced its renewed intention to fell three healthy street trees on Trelawney Road, Falmouth in mid to late November.

These trees are in the conservation area and should be protected. They are mature and well loved giving beneficial amenity to the environment by providing visual appeal, shade and wildlife habitat.

Despite repeated requests, the Council has failed to supply verifiable evidence to justify this felling. Instead it has put out misleading statements and said that details cannot be given, due to reasons of confidentiality. It has tried to fell on three previous occasions and all have been stopped by public protest.

Stop the Chop!, a campaign group formed to press the Council to justify its reasons for felling, is instructing Paul Powlesland, the environmental barrister, to investigate this case. Paul attended the last protest and said that the Council’s failure to share information is, “unhelpful and actually really quite outrageous”. He is able to provide counsel via Public Access at £80 per hour from Garden Court Chambers.
