SAVE THE TELL TALE HEART TATTOO & GALLERY
The Tell Tale Heart Tattoo & Gallery is hoping to raise $20,000 to cover the costs of accumulating rent, utility bills and other hard sustainability costs while we are closed during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
On March 13, 2020, we made the decision to shut down operations of our beloved family business, a place we invested our savings, and months worth of work into opening. We are a personal service setting, and there is no way to provide tattooing at a distance, so the shop's income has come to a complete halt. As a result, we were forced to lay off our staff and tattoo artists, who depend on our family business to sustain them and their families.
Our doors have remained closed ever since. And unfortunately no one knows when it will truly be safe to reopen. Meantime, we have been continuing to pay enormous commercial rent costs and all of our non-negotiable monthly bills. With $0 coming in, the shop's emergency fund has been depleted. We've worked too hard on this place and we are not ready to give up on it! With your incremental help, we hope to be able to raise enough funding to survive the closure and ultimately reopen and rehire our staff so they can continue to provide for themselves and their families.
ABOUT THE TELL TALE HEART
In the four-plus years since we opened on historic Brant Street in Burlington, Ontario, THE TELL TALE HEART is proud to have contributed to the local economy and quickly become a local landmark, with visitors from all over Canada and the abroad making the trek every day to get a custom tattoo with one of our in-demand artists – many of whom were booked a year in advance. We are proud to be winners of the Burlington Post Reader’s Choice Platinum Award for Best Tattoo Studio two years in a row. With the help of our friends and family, we built the shop with our bare hands, with the goal of making the place itself a work of art. And that hard work, sacrifice and dedication has been rewarded with over 75 5-star Google Reviews from our happy customers, who line up around the block on our Surprise Walk-In-Days for an opportunity to get a small tattoo from one of our fine artists.
In addition to Superior Custom Tattooing, we also contribute to the local arts scene by curating art shows that showcase the work of international artists including horror icon Clive Barker (Hellraiser), Hellboy’s Mike Mignola, dark artists Travis Louie, Chet Zar, Nat Jones (30 Days of Night), Daniele Serra, as well as local artists such as photographer Andrea Hunter. For these efforts, we have been awarded the Platinum award for Best Art Gallery two years running. The place is a veritable museum, unlike any tattoo shop in the world. Everyone who visits our shop loves it as much as we do. We want to save this special place. We hope you agree it’s worth saving.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
Everything we can! The government small business support programs have unfortunately come too little too late for many families who leveraged their life savings to open their small businesses, which we are tragically seeing shutter permanently all around us. We have applied for the Canadian Emergency Business Loan, but unfortunately asking small businesses to take on even more debt is not a real solution. Likewise, the recently announced "75% rent reduction" program places the power in the hands of the landlords, who are not obligated to participate and asks them to take on debt they previously didn't have to save their tenants. It's a deal that does not benefit them, and most commercial landlords will not go for it. This program has also not yet been implemented as we continue to pay huge commercial rent for our street level shop, along with all of the other non-negotiable monthly costs.
