UPDATED:
I am a full time caregiver to both of my parents. We lost our home in Hurricane Irma. FEMA is not offering any relief. I’ve contacted local charitable agencies, the housing authority, health and human services, and a local social worker. No services were available to placing us in permanent housing. We are running out of time and money. We can no longer afford the hotel. We only eat once a day. I’ve tried everything I can think of to try and fix the situation. I’m currently trying to raise enough money to pay for first month, last month and security deposit for an apartment, some furniture and hopefully have enough over to finally purchase a vehicle. I found a job as a substitute teacher but will be unable to work without transportation and a roof over our head.
Here is a little info about me and my parents.
My dad, Douglas Shuck, devoted his entire life to knowledge and learning, and he raised two children. He was C.I.O and VP of Britannica.com. My parents went bankrupt due to their illnesses. 15 months ago, my dad had suffered a misdiagnosed case of hydrocephalus. Over the course of 12 months he had six brain surgeries, 2 comas, a vegetative state and had to complete stints in a Rehab hospital.
My mom has been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, two types of scoliosis, spinal stenosis and 6 herniated discs. I care for them both full time and try to substitute teach when possible.
I’m so grateful for the love my parents have shown me my entire life. I enjoy spending time with them and taking care of them. However, a daughter’s love isn’t enough. I spend every waking hour taking care of them and worrying about them. When my parents stumble, I have to be there to catch them. I try, but I can’t do it myself. They tell you on an airplane to put your oxygen mask on before putting on anyone else’s because you can’t help anyone if you’re incapacitated. Right now, I can’t put my own mask on and I need help.
