Our neighbors home, The Old Mill House at 1327 Jeremy Swamp Road is a beloved piece of history in Southbury, CT, and was tragically ravaged by a flash flood on Sunday, August 18th. The entire lower level of this cherished home, including its contents, was destroyed, and there was extensive water damage to the first floor. The surrounding patios, stone waterways, and much of the grounds were also severely damaged, with parts washed away downstream.
As the community begins the arduous task of cleanup and waits for access to the washed-away road to be fully restored, it’s clear that saving this treasured piece of history will require immense effort and resources.
The owners, heartbroken by the devastation, along with supportive neighbors, are working tirelessly to remove debris and prevent further damage. However, the costs associated with restoring this irreplaceable home are overwhelming.
We, the neighbors, are reaching out to the community for support in preserving this vital piece of Southbury and Connecticut's heritage. Many of you have walked this beloved, quiet road and admired this landmark.
A Brief History of the Old Mill House:
In 1825, Ebenezer Booth established a cabinet shop at Jeremy Brook, along the 350-year-old Woodbury Path, which was once used to transport agricultural goods and livestock to the East Derby Docks for shipment to the Caribbean and beyond. Booth crafted tables, chairs, stools, cradles, cutlery, and other wooden items, powered by a waterwheel fed by the nearby dam. In 1846, the property was purchased by William H. Curtis, who transformed Booth’s shop into a knife production facility. Since then, the Old Mill House has been lovingly maintained by various owners who have all contributed to preserving this Southbury treasure.
We humbly ask for your help in restoring this historic home to its former glory. Your generosity will ensure that this piece of our shared history continues to stand for future generations.
Please consider donating to support this vital cause. All contributions will go directly to the homeowners, Tony Craig and Idris Rheubottom.
