22/10/2019 - Eviction of The Maze Rio footage

[English below]

The Maze ė o Bob. E o Bob é o The Maze.

JUNTOS CONSEGUIMOS!!!

++++++ ENGLISH ++++++

The Maze is Bob. And Bob is The Maze. It is what he has been living and breathing for the past 40 years since he first came to Brazil in 1979. In four decades Bob has received the world with open arms, and those who came not only fell in love with The Maze but also with the favela where it is located, with Rio, with Brazil. Lifelong friendships were made here and prejudices broken every day.

On 21st October 2019, in a local government clampdown, Bob, together with his wife and their 16-year-old son, were evicted from their home. Put on the street and robbed of their only source of sustenance as the result of a decade long battle against Brazilian bureaucracy, local politics and corruption.

The Maze, an architectural icon of Rio and cultural center for a whole community, is facing demolition.

The court responsible for the closure is basing its decision, to put a 76-year-old man and his family on the street at the height of the fight against a serious health problem, on vague, inconclusive and discriminatory opinions and an assessment made 'by eye'. Numerous technical reports proving the strong construction and two decades of press cuttings documenting the legal battle were ignored or buried in bureaucracy.

Bob never has and never will pay the bribes they offered him to resolve his case. There are bars, restaurants, bakeries, hairdressers, building shops and car repair shops up on the thriving and peaceful hillside which he fought for years to rid of drug traffic, guns and corrupt police.

The Maze has been singled out as 'irregular' meaning awaiting legalization. Now that it is closed and threatened with demolition the officials have nothing to fear. They can come up the hill and pick off the vulnerable, put demolition orders on their houses too in order to clear them off and make space for high rise buildings and hotels with a postcard view.

What the funds will be used for:
Officials have been drowning Bob for the past 15 years with ever-new 'requirements' and lawsuits depleting his financial resources and retirement savings.
However, the legalization process must be completed to prevent demolition and for The Maze to continue its activities which provide employment for the local community residents, benefit local small businesses and continue a decade of support for the local ballet and football schools.
With the right funding and legal support in place, current laws will oblige the city to legalize The Maze. For this, Bob needs to raise an estimated USD 25,000. The funds will cover:
- the requested requirements
- legal fees
- and help Bob and his family survive until they can move back into their home

Who is organizing this campaign and what the relationship to Bob and The Maze:
The campaign was created by David Leija Bear (USA) and Gerd Brand-Kruth (Germany) who are friends of the family and volunteers who worked on the mosaic project.
