Matthew & Daniel Barton Memorial Rink

This fundraising effort was to save and restore the “Matthew and Daniel Barton Memorial Rink” located in Courthouse Park on Route 301, in Hanover County Virginia. Thanks to the many donors through "Go Fund Me", & especially Doswell Energy Center, & The Washington Capitals (Peter Robinson, Director of Youth Hockey Development), the rink has been saved and restored.
The following is why this page was started:
The Hockey Rink was built over 19 years ago in memory of Matthew Barton who lost his battle to Lymphoblastic Lymphoma at the age of 10. In 2009, Matthew’s brother Daniel passed from complications of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy at the age of 19 at which time the Memorial’s name was changed to the “Matthew and Daniel Barton Memorial Rink.”
Both Matthew and Danny began playing hockey at a very young age. Matthew and Danny played at local facilities both inline and ice hockey. After Matthew’s passing, Danny continued to play travel hockey as well as middle and high school. The Barton rink has served our community for the past 19 plus years as a place for both youth and adults to enjoy the game of inline hockey. The Barton rink has been utilized for many purposes such as middle school hockey, tournaments, pick up hockey and fundraisers for several organizations.
The rink, owned and operated by Hanover County Parks and Recreation, has been shut down since April of this year due to necessary repairs and more likely complete removal and replacement of the surface. Unfortunately, we were advised by Hanover County that they would not have available funds until at least 3-4 years from now. The rink can not sit that long without further deterioration of the surface, and therefore this Go Fund Me Page was started.
