Let's have Nikki's back AND her head! What's that mean, you ask?
As all of you know, Nikki received some very unwelcome news recently and will be facing round two of kicking cancer's butt in the coming weeks.
In order for Nikki to give her cancer the final "knock out blow", the chemotherapy prescribed has plans to try to take her hair along with the cancer.
We love Nikki AND her spunky mane, so we are going to help Nikki take back some control and defeat this cancer WITH her mane intact!!
Fortunately, we can help Nikki keep her signature curly locks by investing in a "cool" (literally!!) new therapy!
What is Cold Cap Therapy?
Cold Cap Therapy, or modern-day scalp cooling, involves the use of a special cap or set of caps, cooled to very cold temperatures, and worn for a
period of hours before, during and after each chemotherapy treatment. It is believed that the cold temperature constricts the blood vessels leading to the hair follicles, reducing the amount of chemo drugs that reach the follicles during the period that the caps are worn; also, that the cold puts the follicles "to sleep," temporarily limiting their metabolic activity. This process has been in use in Europe for over 20 years. Many thousands of patients in
the United States have learned of and successfully used Cold Cap Therapy in the last few years.
Average cost: $2,000 - $4,000
Ways to support Nikki during the coming weeks and years:
- Prayers! There is power in prayer, and with all of us that love Nikki and her
sweet family, prayers will play a major role in defeating this cancer for good.
- Be "normal". With all the craziness that comes along with a cancer diagnosis,
Nikki and her family just seek normalcy.
Calls, texts, hugs, funny stories, these are all welcome!
- Chip in a toward this fund to help provide the cold cap therapy!! Anyone that
knows Nikki and Eric knows that they are extremely humble and not ever ones
to ask for anything. When Nikki found out she was going to need to do another
round of chemo that would mean losing her hair again, she was devastated.
Nikki's reaction is in line with many studies that have found hair loss to be the
most devastating side effect of chemotherapy. Nikki wants to feel as close to
normal as possibly during her battle, and keeping her hair is one of the shields
she can use to maintain that normalcy.
Things that are not as helpful:
- Meals and food. Nikki is on a special diet that is fueling her body in it's fight
while depriving the remaining cancer cells of any fuel for sticking around. Let's
help Nikki keep on track by not bringing her food that cannot be utilized and
becomes something for her or her family to dispose of.
Gift cards to Red Clover Market or Target would be helpful, as Nikki can use these
toward necessary therapeutics and household items.
- Asking lots of questions. We've all heard of how the definition of insanity is
"doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result", right? Well,
sometimes the definition of insanity for a badass momma fighting cancer is
"telling the same things over and over to lots and lots of friends and family". Let's
help Nik out by not making her go insane. :) Nikki has plans to keep us all
updated on social media, let's let her energies be focused on healing and not
recounting stressful information.
- Bringing gifts or tangible items. We all know that Nikki is a domestic goddess
that loves a cozy, inviting, and clutter-free home. Let's help her maintain her
"zen" and refrain from extra trinkets that may cause her unnecessary stress.
In closing;
Let's show our lovely Nikki and her special family how much we care
for them, are there to lift them up, and want to give them the strength needed to
blast this cancer out for good. It would be impossible to find someone as
courageous, delightful, inspiring, and fierce as Nikki Sprague. Let's help Nikki save the mane, but kick the cancer!
** As mentioned above, asking for help or "handouts" is not something Nikki or
the Sprague family feel comfortable with, it was not without a great amount of
convincing that Nikki finally allowed some of us to put together this fundraiser
in order to give people an outlet to show their love and support in a helpful way.**
