SAVE THE LAST 60 JAVAN RHINOS FROM EXTINCTION

Donation protected
With around 60 individuals, the Javan Rhinoceros is one of the most critically endangered species on the planet. AND THIS IS OUR LAST EFFORT TO SAVE THEM!

The Urgent Priority Management Program joined the OFORA Trust Foundation to launch the last campaign in their best efforts to save this amazing species from extinction.

This is the last chance to save this incredible species!

JAVAN RHINOCEROS (Rhinoceros sondaicus)
Although being one of the smallest species of rhinos, it is still the second-largest animal in Indonesia.

Its historical range spanned from East India, southern China, Vietnam, to Sumatra. Today, this species is only confined to a single location on the island of Java, the Ujong Kulon National Park. The number of adult individuals is estimated to be around 50.

Poaching for illegal Chinese medicine, growing human population, habitat fragmentation, or even possibly poisons used by fishermen for fishing have been the chief factors in the steady decline. However, the current threat is the spread of the invasive Arenga palm tree.

ARENGA PALM TREE REMOVAL SCHEME
The Arenga is an invasive species that grows very densely and quickly overtakes entire areas with very little opportunity for other plants to grow.
Although the plants on which the Javan Rhinoceros browses can grow back within a year, the Arenga palm tree covers over 60% of the Ujung Kulon National Park, the only refuge of the Javan Rhinoceros.

Our team is working tirelessly to remove the Arenga palm tree from the Javan Rhino distribution range. Long, hot and humid days are spent in the jungles manually cutting down the Arenga invasion. These men and women are holding the last survival thread of this incredible species.

Due to the critically low numbers, the Javan Rhinoceros, together with the Sumatran Rhinoceros are highly susceptible to inbreeding and diseases and are both listed as CRITICALLY ENDANGERED on the IUCN Red List.

WHO IS INVOLVED?
  • OFORA TRUST FOUNDATION

OFORA Trust Foundation is a non-government, not-for-profit conservation organisation that has a strong mission in building the ideal conditions for increasing the Javan Rhino Population and its habitat, accompanied by enhancing the sustainable welfare of the community of Ujung Kulon National Park.

  • THE URGENT PRIORITY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

The UPM Program is a global non-governmental, not-for-profit conservation organisation formed to tackle the current mass extinction, restore the world's biodiversity and conserve the future.

  • ECO RESTORATION TRUST

Formally The Curlew Trust, Eco Restoration Trust is an Irish-based non-governmental, not-for-profit charity conservation organisation whose mission is habitat restoration and species reintroduction.

OUR MISSION ROADMAP
  • Javan rhinos are starving due to the lack of their browsing plants caused by the invasion of the Arenga Palm tree -

  • By implementing the Arenga Palm Tree Removal Scheme, we secure natural food for the remaining rhinos -

  • The natural browsing plants the rhinos depend upon return within 1 year since the palm tree removal -

  • With enough natural food, the rhinos will breed and be able to feed their babies properly -

  • The team of OFORA and The UPM Program will intensify monitoring operations and will keep the Arenga palm tree in check -

  • The team of OFORA and The UPM Program will then establish a Conservation Smart House, a centre for education, training and ecotourism -

  • This House will then not only be the headquarters for the conservation of the Javan rhino but the entire Ujong Kulon and will bring up a new generation of conservationists. By establishing local jobs, we will tackle unemployment which consequently tackles the threats of poaching.

WHERE THE FUNDS WILL BE USED?
As per our mission roadmap, the Arenga Palm Tree Removal Scheme is the urgent priority to secure the species' future.

The funds will be used for food, transport, tools, monitoring and for a modest wage to the local workers.

!! 100% of raised funds will be directed to the cause !!

CONCLUSION
We are in the midst of man-made mass extinction. We lose up to 200 species every day, and it won't be long until we, humans will join the list of extinct species. Why? Because we depend on our environment with every mouthful of food and with every lungful of air.
Our clock is 5 minutes from striking midnight, we not only can stop it and slowly rewind it, but we simply MUST!

''I can't save the world. And neither can you. But together, WE WILL!'' - John Ryan, The CEO & Founder of the UPM Program
