Save The Hallowed Halls!

Even if you’re not familiar with The Hallowed Halls Recording Studios and Event Space, you’re probably familiar with what comes out of it and what we do. Portland artists like Paul Gilbert, Matt Pike, Fruition, March Fourth, Poison Idea, the Shook Twins, and many more have made their recordings here. We have hosted many community events with focus on music industry, education, and wellness. Through collaborative live events and live streamed concerts with local companies like Volume Bomb, Beloved, May Day Lovestream and Pic A Thon, we’ve helped raise thousands of dollars for non-profits including the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Don’t Shoot Portland, and Black Lives Matter. We have provided a starting point for young engineers to learn their trade through our volunteer program and have built additional studios in our building for them to take on their own clients. We are dedicated both to music and to Portland and we have been proud to be involved.

On March 2nd, Mike Thrasher, our newest partner at The Hallowed halls, died. It was a devastating loss, not just for the Hallowed Halls, but for Portland in general. Mike had helped music in Portland grow throughout his life and his recent involvement with The Hallowed Halls was one of the ways he was continuing his legacy. Unfortunately, not everyone feels the way Mike did about our local music scene. Since his passing we have been in a fight for our very existence.

Here is where we’re at today: In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the studio’s bank accounts have been drained, we have been blocked from applying for any Covid-19 relief loans, and our ability to generate the income we need to pay bills and continue as an important fixture in the Northwest Music and Arts community has been severely weakened. Through the support of some very wonderful and motivated local musicians we have been able to continue operation on a skeleton crew this year, but our resources are wearing thin. We can’t fight this fight alone. We are asking for your assistance to raise money for the legal representation needed to stop these actions.

The building we operate out of has been an important part of the community since 1918. Originally it was the neighborhood library, and in the Depression it was a well-baby center. In the 50s Woody Guthry wrote songs and played here.  In the 70s it was run by Lea Wikman and served as a home for community action groups dedicated to help the residents of SE Portland. The building was officially renamed after Lea Wikman at that time and is the 1st public building in the state of Oregon to be named after a woman. We’ve tried to continue in the this tradition to the best of our ability: we’ve had community meetings, educational forums, weddings, yoga classes, and theatrical events. We’ve done fundraisers here and throughout Portland. We’ve provided sound and technical help for community events. We use the space for music and art but those things without our community are nothing.

We will prevail, but we need help. Legally, we are on good footing and we will have all the tools we need to see this through, with your continued support. We’ve got this if you’ve got us. Help us now, and we’ll be here to help you in the future. Thanks.www.thehallowedhalls.com
