Save the Goose

What are we:  Snow Goose is a 65' marine science education, research, and charter vessel in Washington and Alaska.

What we do:
Since 1995 she has been a floating classroom  for 1200-1500 students annually from middle through college level.  Building on a foundation of Stewardship Through Marine Science Education, each student interacts in four hands-on stations throughout a 4 hour voyage.  Curriculum is aligned with public and private schools and students bring their experience back to the classroom and community.

How we fund it & where does it goes:
Funding for Snow Goose education program is provided by public and private schools, local PTSA programs, and a private donor.  Additional funds are generated through adult charters in Alaska during the summer as well as research and various projects .  Operational costs are distributed to employees, science equipment, maintenance, fuel, insurance, safety equipment, permits, USCG inspections, and slip rental.

Who runs the Snow Goose:
All of the crew.  However, as a captain, mechanic, and owner,  I'm responsible for the safety and efficiency of a 1973 vessel.  In 2004 I shifted my career from a classroom teacher to taking ownership of the Snow Goose and its science education platform.  Since then the program has grown in participants and operating season.  We, as a collaborative group of teachers, work constantly to improve our practice of how and what we teach.

Why
are seeking funding:  Snow Goose is in need of repair to increase her longevity as a safe working vessel.  Covid-19 has affected all revenue from charters and if she is to continue to operate safely now is the time to take action.

What we are seeking funding for:

A.  Restoration of the hull below the water line:  estimated cost $45,500.
B.  Recoat propellors and shafts to reduce biological growth:  cost $2500
C.  Replace anodes to protect hull from deterioration:  cost $1200
D.  Repair fuel tanks due to erosion:  estimated cost $1500
E.   Update fuel delivery system and eliminate leaks:  cost $3500

All donations contributed to Snow Goose will be directly earmarked for repair projects.  Each dollar donated will ensure the vessels longevity thus continuing our education program for all students.  If our goal is exceeded, funds will be used for a student interactive website linked directly to our school program. Snow Goose community and its participants appreciates any support possible to keep getting our students involved with their local marine ecosystem.

Many thanks,
Dan
