Fat Tailed Gerbil Conservation Fund

We are excited to announce that the opportunity to acquire new breeding doops has arisen, particularly a young juvenile female. This will change not only the course of the project but the fate of the species in North American collections.

Unfortunately, after the COVID-19 pandemic and a change in the US economy, a number of larger fat-tailed breeders stepped down and dispersed their gerbils, myself included; although this was due to an unexpected move in 2022.

That said, the fat-tailed gerbil is not presently maintained by any zoological institutions in the United States and wasn’t at the rise of COVID. The species has only existed thanks to the work of a select few dedicated private breeders. On the stateside front, @tinytailymousery and I are working hard to bring the species back from the edge of near extinction. Unfortunately, we are one of the last breeding collections fighting to keep these guys around in the western hemisphere. With less than 50 breeding animals and no chance of importing more due to laws banning importation, the pressure is on.

Here at Excelsior Exotics, we have begun discussions with @maruthedoop on IG and some zoo clientele about joining us in our efforts to save this species and grow their numbers quicker.

We just love these adorable fat-tailed gerbils and would hate to see them go! These are some of the rarest, friendliest, most low-maintenance, and longest-lived small rodents out there. They are a great option for families or someone wanting a more personable pet, and a great ambassador or exhibit species for zoological programs.
