"Some people want it to happen, Some people wish it would happen, others make it happen." ~ Michael Jordan
We have a huge problem today in the Hospitality Industry. We are into a realm of the great “Unknown” in regards to the future of our Industry as we know it. The ENTIRE Foodservice Industry is in danger of being wiped-out of work for a very long time. Many might never go back to work again as a Chef and they need something besides an expired unemployment check to get them through their days. We are climbing the walls....
I remember that beautiful September 11 morning almost 20 years ago when the planes flew through the World Trade Towers. I was a young and upcoming chef working with an Elite Group of Chefs at a resort in Orange County. I was laid-off. Many of us were. But it took years for my mind and heart to recover from that loss of opportunity and experience. I promised I would NEVER let that happen to anyone again if it was within my powers.
That was a “visible” killer. This is the “invisible” killer of our industry. This one might be for keeps for a lot of our industry-lifers around us now.
Sixteen-Weeks ago, in what started as a “Bright-Idea to feed a CoVid-ICU and ER in Oceanside in chat-room between a loyal restaurant patron , some Chefs, Industry heavyweights And a Local Farmer, turned "Word of Mouth San Diego Foodservice" into a small CoVid Resistence movement, and now a Non-Profit game changer.
Twenty weeks later five Out-of-work Chefs and culinarians started, and continue making delicious food in the form of fantastic hot lunch meals for the 65 CoVid ICU and Emergency room Doctors and Nurses at Tri-City Medical Centers in Oceanside, California.
This was all Funded by myself and by Brian Ferguson, the generosity of Mission Ave Bar and Grills owner, and with the Chefs Freely Volunteering their time and skills.
I now have 20 more chefs on a waitlist to be able to work with us. Countless industry employees have raised their hands. ChefWorks sent me 2 huge cases of aprons to help the cause, Seafood Donations from Catalina Offshore Ana as far away as South Africa.... And on and on.....
Today I formed a Non-Profit catering company called Word of Mouth San Diego Foodservice. Our free Meal donations services have GREATLY expanded and we have now delivered to Tri-Cities Hospitals CoVid ICU and ER, the UCSD 10Th Floor CoVid Er/ICU, Scripps Chula Vista CoVid Wards, Naval Undersea Warfare Medical, the USO Marine Recruit Depot Airport Facility, and the Third Floor Rehabilitation Department at UCSD Hillcrest. Next week we will start delivering to the Tent CoVid testing facility in Hillcrest at Mercy Hospital and I WILL expand that to EVERY outdoor testing Facility in the county before I am done. Nobody deserves it more then these humans.
This project has allowed us to primarily give the dignity back to out-of-work chefs, Vendors, Salesman and cooks in an horrifying industry Killing Viral Pandemic. That carried over by also allowing us to bring smiles, and a warm belly, and Smiles to the countless First Responders working tirelessly isolated from their family and friends. These Rockstars in the "Ground Zero" that has become the CoVid wards in all these hospitals, and military institutions through selfless service, say these meals are often the highlights of their days.
Our personal bank accounts just can't support the food cost, Gas, Transportation and Envelopes for our employees anymore: We are asking you for some financial help. Every dime received will be plowed back into Paying future labor, farmers, Fisherman, salesman, and serving FREE meals to boost Morale, Productivity and Pride in our town and country.
Every dime of Every donation will get Tilled back into this "Garden of Plenty" that we are growing and every penny counts. For Example:
$50 produces 10 meals
$150 produces 10 meals and pays an OUT OF WORK Chef to prep
$250 produces 25 meals and pays two Chefs
$500 produces 50 meals and pays three Chefs
$1000 produces 200 meals and pays four Chefs
Be a catalyst for change and help our industry with a gift to help their transition into the unknown. Food Donations As well as cash are beyond welcome as are vehicles and time. We will make you proud on this one: please help and share.
The time for half-talk and measures are over. Put your money where your mouth is.
