Save the Bees Lost in the California Fires

As a result of the recent fires of unprecedented magnitude that broke out across Northern California this week, homes, property, and businesses were engulfed in flames in the blink of an eye, leaving little more than ash and heartbreak in its wake. Notwithstanding the ongoing challenges faced by beekeepers today, California's ecosystem remains in delicate balance as bee populations across the nation suffer serious decline and the latest disaster is one that has caused a devastating blow.

Beekeeping is a centuries old practice that blends art and science, often requiring a lifetime to perfect and an immense dedication of time and resources. Beekeepers play a special role in the propagation of bee colonies that are essential to our agriculture and survival. My brother, Valera Kitsen, is one such person that has dedicated his life to the success of these irreplaceable pollinators and priceless resource.

As a father and a husband, Valera has spent the last two decades focused on the cultivation of bee colonies, but the recent fires have dealt a fatal blow to his business and the bee populations in California. On Tuesday, Vacaville residents were issued a mandatory evacuation as a result of the nearby fire activity. Acre by acre, the neighbors watched in terror as the fire raced towards their property.

As a combination of high heat and windy conditions persisted through the night, the grove where the bees were located stood no chance of being saved or protected as residents fled for their lives. The fire was finally contained the next day but the damage had already been done. Upon returning, all that was left was ash.

Please consider donating to help restore Valera’s bee business. Your donations will go directly towards the rebuilding and cultivation of the bee farm. The money will be used to purchase the materials that will replace the 300 bee boxes that were destroyed in the fire, and the bees that were housed within them. Every contribution, big or small will be a big help in achieving this goal. Please spread the word about our cause and help us to replenish the bee population that was lost. We are grateful for your support and we are grateful for the Lord’s protection during this difficult time.
