Hi dear friends,
We have been working really hard to stay alive during the shutdown. Work hasn't stopped but funds coming in have dropped to about 10%. I am getting concerned about the long nights JB is spending on the e-commerce site so we can have a chance through this. It is taking a toll.
Olyphant has been here since 2010. It is an established business that has seen JB working incredibly hard for years, at times without pay in a state that gives very few incentives to small business especially when it comes to taxes. We haven't payed ourselves through all of this but it takes so much just to keep a small business running during the month. Did I mention taxes? The building owners have not been sympathetic last month, we will see if they are more understanding of the situation next month. We have applied to the various small business loans that were put in for this situation but they aren't coming in and at least one said they are out of funds. It is heartbreaking to see your best friends like so many in our community struggle without pay for all of their incredible hard work.
I love Olyphant. We need an art supply store downtown that has knowledgeable and supportive staff that are engaged in the local art community. As an artist I understand that it will never be enough for artists to paint and create without other artists, venues, bookstores, libraries, and community. Olyphant is a gem because of the many friends that come through our doors and the many ways we can support Olympia artists. The art world can be an elitist place and the art supply store has always been a place where creativity and DIY is the precedent. We want to continue supplying tools, knowledge, and venue to keep artists functioning!
On a community level, can we help keep the small businesses that make Olympia special afloat while the government loans have so far failed us? Businesses, which were deemed unessential like the bookstores like Lastword Books, venues that don't serve food, like Cryptatropa, us the art supply store, and other local business are needing help to get past this. We will come out of this together! Anything you can contribute will help us come out of the shutdown with a functional local industry!
