Arlington Swim Club, a community pool located in South Bend, IN, is in jeopardy of closing our doors if we can not raise the funds to keep it open! Many people have grown up swimming there, in a family setting, providing a safe place to learn to swim and have a great summer! We would love to keep the pool open, but we need your help!
We believe in open communication and clear disclosure. Our pool is in jeopardy because we trusted the wrong person. The treasurer mishandled the funds, did not pay taxes, and left Arlington Pool in turmoil. There is an open police investigation, and while ideally this investigation will result in the person responsible being held accountable, we do not have the time to wait for these results if we want to save Arlington Pool!!! We have scrimped and gotten by, but we have lost our non-profit status and owe for back employee taxes. If we can pay the taxes back, we can regain our non-profit status, which is what we are hoping this campaign will do.
Yes, we made a mistake. We have changed the way that we are doing our accounting so that we do not let this happen again. We have learned and, hopefully, with your help we can stay open and offer the pool to families and children to swim for many years to come!
Below is a testimonial from one of our members:
"For the past 10 years, since moving to the neighborhood, Arlington Pool has become my family's sanctuary. She may not be a big beautiful pool to the unknowing eye, but all you have to do is walk through those doors and you will find her charm. You will find families gathered, laughing and swimming together. You will find new friendships being made, and old friendships being rekindled. For the past 10 years Arlington Pool has been the place my family and I have gone to after a long day of work, when we just need a little escape from reality. It's the place my teenager goes to meet her friends at, instead of staying cooped up in the house on electronics all summer. It is the one thing we can't wait for every spring, and the one thing we miss every winter.
Over the past 10 years at Arlington we have met some of our closest friends, and run into old friends we haven't seen in years. With all the troubles and violence South Band has been facing, it is places like Arlington that bring families together, in a safe and fun environment, and remind us of the good in this city. If we lose Arlington, we lose more than a pool. We lose a safe place for teenager to come and hang out together. We lose families coming together, and children learning to swim on a hot summer day. We lose friendships being made and we lose the memories of families spending time together.
Arlington Pool is so much more than a pool. It is a safe place where memories are made, friendships are formed and community begins. Thank you for taking the time to listen to the members of Arlington Pool and thank you in any help you can give in saving this pool."
Sincerely,
Rae
