Hi, my name is James Pesantez, Organizer/Responsible Party:
I am a last year Medical Student from la Universidad Católica de Cuenca and have a Bachelors of Psychology from Western Connecticut State University. I recently traveled to the Ecuadorian Amazonian Rainforest to help out the Department of Public Health with its vaccine campaign and came face-face with the devastating reality of the living conditions and accommodations that the local family's manage on a day-to-day basis. It impacted me significantly as I walked through these villages and came across a multitude of children of all ages who were consistently smiling, but whom I could see with my own eyes that their health was being impacted on all levels.
I became curious and began to question the health officials to understand what was going on with the health of these children and came into the gruesome reality that about 3,500 children were suffering from acute or chronic malnutrition in the region. This sudden awareness was impactful and made me want to help a small group within this extensive community of Taisha, called the Community of Surik Nuevo. This community has approximately a total of 115 cases of acute malnutrition that the Public Health Ministry has identified and isolated. I would like to extend a helping hand, to this community and with your contribution will be able to make a significant on the lives of these children.
The existing situation has been made even worse by the Coronavirus pandemic because there is a shut down in Ecuador and it has been difficult to establish a fluent food supply out to this community because they are deep in the Amazon and are very isolated. This has been devastating to these families and the healthcare workers in the area. It hasn't been easy and the seasonal epidemic of Dengue Fever is also expected to hit the community soon so they need our help and contribution more than ever to be able to withstand this difficult time.
I am asking for your contribution to help me be able to provide food assistance and try to find a preventive measure through scientific research to this community who is in great need, now more than ever.
