In these unprecedented times…just kidding. This isn’t a car ad.
This is a plea to save an institution in North Beach. Tattoo Boogaloo has been a cherished business in North Beach for over 10 years and has become a safe harbor in the city. On any given day, neighborhood folks and visitors bop in to say hello to the smiling faces of Deanna, Chris, and Mez. If you have ever shared laughs with Deanna, a chat on the bench with Chris, or a political discussion with Mez, you know what a welcoming safe place Tattoo Boogaloo is for so many of us. Not to mention the absolutely world class tattoos.
If you know Mez, Chris and Deanna, you know that they are incredibly reluctant to ask for help. Each one of them would give a stranger the shirt off of their backs. Whether it’s Deanna making Christmas cookies for the homeless in North Beach, Mez buying acquaintances groceries, or Chris doling out smokes on the front bench, they are always giving.
After many tearful conversations with them about making rent, trying to survive, and the very real possibility of closing the doors, I have decided it is time to ask for them.
As you all know times are tough, and for San Francisco tattoo shops times are really tough. Tattoo Boogaloo shut it's doors on March 16th and has not yet been able to open. There is currently no real plan in place in San Francisco to reopen tattoo shops.
Unfortunately, this pandemic could not have been predicted so in December this savvy business team used a majority of their savings to clean, renew, and refresh the shop for their upcoming 10th anniversary. Because of this they did not have much in the way of savings when the shop was ordered to close for 3 weeks…turned 5 months and counting. Their insurance company (and back-up insurance company) found loop holes in wording to deny their claims.
This means that they have been keeping the shop afloat using their personal savings and these are now starting to dwindle.
Now it our turn to lift them up and show them what they mean to us. Please give what you can. It would be such a tragedy to not be able to bop in for a smile and a wave in their beautiful (newly remodeled) shop again.
You know they would do the same for you.
Any donated funds will go towards covering the operating overhead while the shop remains closed. If there are any remaining funds when the shop reopens they will be used to help other North Beach businesses survive.
Thank you.
