Hello Friends-

My 9-month-old puppy Millie requires surgery for a congenital heart defect called Patent Ductus Arteriosus or PDA. We discovered this two weeks ago when she went in for her routine vet exam. The veterinarian heard a murmur and it was a 6/6.

Upon hearing this, Millie was scheduled for an appointment with a cardiologist for an EKG and a heart ultrasound. That confirmed the diagnosis. She will require open heart surgery which will be done at UW-Madison Veterinary hospital with a team of cardiac surgeons. They estimate the total cost to be between $10K-$12K.

The good news is that if Millie has this surgery as soon as possible, she will live a happy and healthy life. This is one congenital heart defect in dogs, that if treated early on is curable. But we are already seeing some effects in her lack of weight gain and stunted size. She also already has some stenosis around her aorta due to her heart having to work so hard. 2/3 of dogs that are left untreated with this disease will die before the age of one year.

Millie was found deserted in a barn with 25 other dogs of all ages and breeds. The family that rescued her knew little about the situation but it was pretty awful. When I first met her, she was very thin, and fearful and suffered from ear mites and heart worm too. But the moment I laid eyes on her, I knew she was meant to be my dog.

During the time I have had Millie, I also have had my struggles with severe depression, anxiety and addiction. My life became sad and overwhelming and I turned to alcohol and marijuana to deal with it. Millie was my biggest motivation to get sober and continues to be through my recovery. She is like a daughter to me and I cherish the relationship I have with her. She is the only thing that is truly mine and I will do whatever I can to keep her alive and healthy.
