Meet Sunny — A Survivor with a Second Chance
The South Plains Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc., established in 1988 in Lubbock, Texas, is a non-profit dedicated to the compassionate care of sick, injured, and displaced wildlife. Our mission is to rehabilitate and release animals back into their natural habitats — and to educate and inspire our community to coexist with and protect the wild world around us.
Last Friday, a kind-hearted Good Samaritan spent over five hours rescuing a Common Raven with a severely injured wing and bringing her to us all the way from Lake Alan Henry, Texas. From the moment she arrived, we knew this wasn’t an ordinary wild raven — she calmly perched on a glove, gently accepted food by hand, and even did a little “happy fence dance” when excited.
Her trimmed nails and beak were clear signs: Sunny — as we've now named her — was once in captivity, likely kept as an illegal pet before being released or escaping. Tragically, her wing was shattered beyond repair. Sadly, this is far too common when wild animals are taken from their natural environment and raised improperly.
Today, Sunny is undergoing a life-changing surgery — a wing amputation performed by the incredible Dr. Clary at Live Oak Animal Hospital. While she’ll never fly again, she still has so much life and love left to give — and we’re giving her a second chance.
We’re asking for your help. If you’re able, please consider donating to help cover Sunny’s medical expenses. Every little bit makes a difference in providing her with the care, comfort, and future she deserves. Call Live Oak Animal Hospital directly at [phone redacted] to contribute to Sunny’s account. Let’s show Sunny that her story isn’t over — it’s just beginning. Thank you for standing with us, and with wildlife like Sunny.
