Soy Callejerito is a street dog rescue located in Cusco, Peru, where street dogs are often mistreated and struggling to survive. This incredible organization takes in those in the worst condition, with the saddest stories. These dogs are taken into the refuge and nursed back to health with medical attention and TLC. While they are up for adoption, those that aren’t adopted become lifelong residents in this newfound safehaven. The dogs are given more love and care than they ever could have previously imagined, and live out their lives happier than ever before.
The rescue currently houses 120 animals including pigs, rabbits, and ducks.
Soy Callejerito has been singlehandedly run and funded for 27 years by an incredible warrior for animals, Maité Carreño. She is a single woman who dedicates her entire life to these animals and to providing them a loving home, whether it be through adoption or refuge at the shelter.
Peru does not offer tax exemptions for animal rescues, and you can imagine that the costs add up quickly and are simply overwhelming for Maité.
Soy Callejerito is desperately looking for donations to continue their tireless work for the animals of Cusco.
Your donation will support:
-Food for the animals
-Veterinary Care (vaccinations, spay/neuter, injuries and illnesses)
-Water cisterns (there is no running water supply)
-Necessary shelter maintenance
-The many other expenses that arise, all for the animals

My name is Claire, and I am the organizer of this fundraiser for Maité. I am a regular volunteer of the shelter and adopted my heart dog from Soy Callejerito. Her name was Chica- she was given poisoned meat by a nasty human before she was found by Maité and rushed to the vet. She was physically dead for 2 minutes on the table before bursting back to life. Thank god for that, because she was then able to live happily at the shelter before being adopted by my family, and living the rest of her life loved and cherished as she deserved.
Another story included Maité seeing a dog thrown out the window of a vehicle in front of her, into a ditch. He broke several bones. Maité of course rushed to his aid, brought him to medical care, and he now lives his life zooming around the rescue with a giant grin on his face.
These are examples of just some of the horrible stories of how these dogs are treated before finding peace and happiness at Soy Callejerito.
Please consider donating- even a few dollars goes far in Peru!
