On 24 February 2026, the governors of St Lawrence College in Ramsgate announced the shock closure of the school with effect from the end of the 2026 academic year. Although expressed as a merger with Dover College, this is essentially a takeover by a large commercial group of schools, who wish to strip the assets of St Lawrence College and sell the land for development. St Lawrence College has been an educational oasis within Kent for over 147 years, providing essential services and facilities not only to its pupils, but also, to a large number of community groups.
