Bats are ecologically important animals; they help pollinate plants, provide insect control and help fertilize soil. Due to sprawling land development, bat populations in South Florida are in peril, especially the nearly extinct Florida Bonneted Bat.
Please help me fund a bat house that I will be constructing and installing with the help of volunteer friends and family this year. I have chosen Tree Tops Park because it is an ideal site for many reasons: proximity to trees, a body of water, and distance from human activity. Broward County has already approved this project. The bat house type and location have been selected with the help of scientists at the University of Florida.
Once occupied by a colony of bats, I will work with Broward County to extend park hours for special events so that families can experience the natural wonder of bats emerging at sunset.
I am inspired by witnessing the dwindling number of bats I see from my backyard and University of Florida's bat houses, which are the largest occupied bat houses in the world that attracts many spectators every night!
Your donation will directly contribute to an environmental legacy as well as fund the following:
- One modular 2x2 Bat Condo ($1,820) which can hold 1,200 bats
- Two 4''x6''x16' treated posts
- ~320 lbs Quick-dry concrete for post installation
- 4''x6'' Post Protector
- Outdoor deck stain for the sides and post
- small fence to discourage people from disturbing bats
- a plaque dedicated to major donors
While any contribution is appreciated, donors who contribute more than $250 will have their name included on a plaque next to the bat house.
