Sonny is a 13 week old puppy who has the sweetest personality. He had what seemed to be an upset stomach and threw up a few times. He continued about half a dozen times through out the night within less than a 24 hour window. He was still pooping and peeing fine. Instead of waiting it out another day we felt it would be best to just go to the Vet and get a check up with him early that morning before work around 8am. They figured he ate something and possibly it couldn’t pass.
X-rays were done and nothing showed. They said they will keep an eye on him and take an additional X-ray in a few hours to see if there was anything moving, and also do blood work. Still nothing was found in the X-ray and the blood work came back it was something toxic in his blood. Still not an emergency, they said he would be out on fluids to help flush them out. The Vet then said they would put a liquid barium inside of him to outline the stomach if there was something the X-ray could not pick up as if it was possibly a plastic or fabric. The reason these testing went on is because he still was throwing up and his poop become runny and some blood. At around 5pm I received a call from the Vet stating that they were able to see an object inside his stomach with the Outlined barrier.
I asked if there was for sure 100% something there blocking and the vet stated yes. She recommended to operate which would be around $2,500-$3500. I quickly refused, not for money stand point, for not wanting to cut open a 12 week old puppy and put him through that trauma. It had been barley 24 hours of these symptoms and I’d prefer to wait another day and go from there. I asked what are my other options. She stated I could take him to a Hospital where they take a camera though the mouth and that would cost around $1,000-$1500 and if they needed to do the surgery there, it would cost around $4,500-$6000 because they are board certified techs that charge more which would be the same thing we can do here. I said that I’d rather gamble the $1,500 to not put him through an operation if it’s able to be avoided. The Vet then said that to do that I’m more than welcome to but this usually requires an appointment and she wasn’t sure who would take him at this time right now and we also close at 8PM. I said that a second opinion is always a good idea before operating just to be sure and if that was the case then I’d agree to it, also isn’t it likely this could pass within another 24 hours.
“I have been with him since 8am and he is getting worse by the minute, we need to act quickly.” I then asked again are you again 100% sure there is something blocking him, let’s let another day go by and keep him monitored. “Yes, if we don’t act quickly I don’t feel he will make it by tomorrow to under go the procedure and handle the anesthesia.” When these words were told to me i then asked how long would the procedure take which she told me 1-2 hours and then we would know what the item he ate was. I gave the green light. At 8PM I received a phone call that nothing was found after opening the puppy. I was irate and said that I asked you multiple times if you were 100% sure there was an item blocking him and you then stated if it wasn’t removed he would possibly be dead by tomorrow. Her response “The X-ray showed a possible object and Sonny had all the symptoms as if there was something blocking. He was throwing up and had diarrhea, his stomach was enlarged which all leads to an item not passing.” I said well apparently not. She stated that he was doing very well and should recover just fine. He will stay on the IV treatment with antibiotics. The next day I went early in the AM for an update and they said they were waiting on the blood work. I got to seem him and he was shaken up. I needed to wait until the new blood work came in to see how he was doing. The blood work came back around 4PM and the Vet then recommended me take him to a 24 hour hospital as his vitals got higher and now recommended an Ultra Sound. I replied that the ultra sound should have been done before the operation. The Vet then tried to blame in on a genetic situation that he could have been born with it. The breeder had been extremely reputable and never had one of his babies have any disease for over 20 years in the blood line. I take him to the place they recommended and they wanted $8,000 to keep him for 48 hours to do testing and then determine what to do next. I walked out of there because he felt no remorse and just wanted to make money so I went to another hospital which was very reputable that I found on my own. They were able to take him on the spot with reasonable prices for the Circumstance. They kept him on the IV treatment till the next day where they did the Ultra sound. It came back as Acute Kidney Failure and there is toxicity inside there. He if still up and fighting strong but his levels are extremely high. These results mean that he was not born with any defects or disease and he ate something but they still can’t determine what. We are still waiting for the Lepto test results to come in but they do not feel the IV treatment is going to get him through this as his levels are still increasing. Sonny needs to get Dialysis for his best chance of Survial and is an astronomical amount of money on top of all the money that has already been spent. Please help this little guy out so he can go back home to his brother Rocky and his Family. I won’t let him go down without a fight.
