Save Sodapops Life, fund her Emergency Surgery

This is Sodapop. She is a miniature service horse currently in Cornell Universities' emergency equine clinic. She is nine months old and currently battling impaction colic, which can be deadly. She has been in the clinic for over 24 hours as of writing this.

Sodapop is a medical alert and response service horse, the only federally protected service animal other than dogs in the United States- and is one of if not the youngest service horse on active duty worldwide. She alerts to fainting spells caused by Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, along with behavior interruption and guiding skills. She has been in training for the past eight months and started tasking on her own at just two months old whenever she got the chance to.

She is now nine months old and has started public access training. She adores working in public and constantly wants to do her job while we're out and about. At home, her favorite thing to do is get into things. She loves walking to the village green. Even with being in so much pain that it was hard for her to stand, she was shaking hands and giving kisses to her vets and us as we said goodbye.

So far, she has had:

  • A complete colic workup (Ultrasound, multiple X-rays, bloodwork, etc.)
  • IV fluids (given to her in her neck)
  • Fluids pumped into her stomach (to try softening the fecal blockage)
  • Two types of intensive pain killers
  • Trocharization (A needle inserted into her stomach to pressure build-up of gas) - 4 am 3/2/22
  • Sedation (multiple times and days)
  • More ketamine to deal with breakthrough pain (4 am 3/2/22)
  • Another Trocharization (Noon, 3/2/22)
  • Emergency Surgery (Noon, 3/2/22)
  • Moved to the ICU (3/2/22)
  • Antibiotics (3/2/22)

She will be staying in the hospital for at least a few more days (though some horses take up to a week to clear this type of impaction) with 24/7 care. Our original lowball estimate was 3,000 dollars (yesterday) because she is smaller than a typical horse (she weighs a whopping 56 pounds). The usual price is 5,000.

If she needs surgery, it will be drastically more expensive, up over 10,000 dollars. (UPDATE- she needed surgery)

My mom has loaned me 1,000 dollars, and I've put down 500 (all I have at the moment) to get her the initial life-saving care she needs. But before she comes home, we'll need at least another 1,500. I set the goal at 2,500 because she has shown very little progress and seems like she will be there longer than initially expected, which raises the estimated price.

Her current condition is guarded. She has passed a few balls of manure (she usually goes every 3-4 hours and hasn't had a regular movement in OVER 24 hours). She is very quiet. - 9:01 am 2/2/22

I will continue updating this page with every update I receive.

UPDATE ONE: Just before posting, we got a call. Sodapop needed emergency surgery. She was not a good candidate, and she did have issues while under anesthesia. The surgery was also much more complicated than initially expected, but they removed foreign bodies, and she managed to pull through and wake up. She will be in the ICU as we wait to see how she recovers.

My sister has loaned me 4,000 dollars, allowing them to do the surgery as soon as possible.

The amount we have put down so far is now at 5,500.

Every dollar, share, and healing vibe helps immensely.

At this point, recovery is a long road if she makes it through these next few days. She will need IV nutrition, special feed, special diet changes, help from a nutritionist, more pain management, many days in the ICU, and even more days in the non-ICU section. The price will only keep going up, but she is worth it and is the tiniest yet strongest horse I know.
