Save Smokie: Deported Without My Cat, Fighting to Bring Her

Two weeks ago, my life fell apart.

I was evicted from my home in Las Vegas after losing my job, and I had no choice but to return to Canada. My cat Smokie, my closest companion, was supposed to come with me. I bought her a carrier, and even though I couldn’t afford the full health certificate, I scheduled her rabies vaccination so she could travel.

That day, Smokie panicked at the vet. She lashed out, was reported to Animal Control, and placed into quarantine. The quarantine pushed me past my eviction date, and I was forced to fly back to Toronto alone. At that point, I was told Smokie will be put down.

I left Las Vegas believing my cat — my family — was gone forever.

Just days ago, I received a call: Smokie is still alive. The relief was overwhelming, but my heart broke all over again because I am barred from re-entering the U.S. for 10 years after overstaying my visa. I cannot go back to get her myself.

Smokie’s story is extraordinary. I adopted her from The Animal Foundation when she was about 7 months old. She had spent nearly her entire young life in the pound — anxious, medicated, and overlooked. The staff told me no one wanted her. But the first time she saw me, she rolled onto her back and showed me her belly. That was the day she chose me. From then on, Smokie has been my shadow, my family, and my strength through years of illness, divorce, and hardship.

Now, Smokie is stuck in Las Vegas. I am in Toronto, unemployed, applying to become a Border Control Officer in Newfoundland to be closer to my daughter. I’m doing everything I can to rebuild my life, but I cannot give up on Smokie.

What I Need Help With

Foster care in Las Vegas to keep Smokie safe until transport is arranged.

Transport costs to bring her home to Canada — I’ve been quoted $2,500–$3,000 for customs, clearance, and transport.

Food, litter, and vet care while she waits.
