Shiralea came to life in 2007 when a group of travelling friends fell in love with the lush jungles and stunning beaches of Koh Phangan. They banded together to carve out the perfect slice of paradise so that they and others could return year after year…
Throughout the years, we have built at Shiralea a strong community of friends from all over the world with whom we shared incredible moments. In that time, our employees and customers not only became friends but also an eclectic happy extended family!
We also pride ourselves on being an integral part of the local community by supporting other Koh Phangan businesses from taxi drivers to massage parlors, motorbike rental shops, restaurants, tour operators, fundraisers for schools, and more.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 has hit the entire world and hasn’t spared our little island. Like other businesses, Shiralea has been really struggling with the absence of tourists due to Thailand closing its borders in March 2020.
With no income at all for the past 8 months, we have still been paying our rent and bills as well as housing, feeding, and paying the staff members who are riding the storm with us. Without their help maintaining the resort, the jungle would quickly swallow the buildings and make it impossible to re-open.
Throughout the years, Shiralea has been employing hundreds of people, the majority being migrant workers from Myanmar (Burma). These hard-working employees left their villages to find work in Thailand where there are more options for jobs and higher salaries. Every month, they send the money they earn at Shiralea to Myanmar to support their families back home. We feel an immense responsibility to keep the business going not only because we don’t want to give up on our own dream but also because so many people rely on it.
The Government of Thailand is slowly re-opening its borders to tourism and we are hopeful that in a few months, people will be flocking back to Koh Phangan.
However, we are quickly coming to the end of our financial resources and are afraid that we won’t be able to survive until then. This is why we are asking for your help to keep Shiralea ALIVE so that we can all meet again in our “home away from home” and keep celebrating life together!
This is not just a business, but this is a home, safe haven, and a paradise for not only the staff and owners, but our guests too
We just need a little boost so any amount you guys can spare will make a huge difference in keeping Shiralea going and by extension, the local community and so many Burmese families thriving!
Next time we see you at the Shiralea bar, the beers are on Seb! ;o)
