I am Ben, a disabled combat veteran, and my 7 year old service dog Sia was recently attacked by two large dogs. In trying to get the two dogs off of Sia, I was knocked over onto a raised large sharp rock and sustained multiple injuries including a serious head wound which required many staples to close and a very painful dog bite on my right hand. Sia did not fare as well as I did.

Sia got many deep bite wounds on all of her limbs and her torso. The worst wound was under her right front “armpit” that was so deep it went almost all the way through her leg. She required emergency medical care for her wounds, and surgery to reattach her muscle in that leg. She has been in the intensive care unit (ICU) for the last week for poly trauma treatment including IV pain medications to control her pain, wound care and IV antibiotics to help prevent infection in her wounds.

I’m lucky to have health insurance and the wounds I sustained were covered by medical insurance. I do not have pet medical insurance for Sia and her medical bills for this attack have already exceeded $24,000.

Unfortunately her hospital stay in the ICU has to be extended even longer. She is having a lot of nausea and vomiting side effects from the medications being used to control her pain. Her wounds are growing a bacteria that can only be treated by a very strong antibiotic that can cause kidney damage.

Her medical bills continue to mount. Sia is a much-loved member of my family. My wife, our 3 young children and I are all devastated by what has happened to Sia. I am doing everything I can to keep her with us, but her medical bills are crushing my family financially. Anything you could donate to this GoFundMe for Sia would be very much appreciated!
