On September 14th, my mom’s beloved 11 year old chihuahua Elvis (Schmelvis) was attacked by a large Bull Terrier during their routine evening walk. The Terrier broke out of his back yard and grabbed ahold of Schmelvis along his spine/abdomen.
My mom tried everything she could, but no amount of screaming, kicking, or crying would convince the Terrier to let go. Because of the commotion, a neighbor came over to help pull the Bull Terrier off. Once there was an opportunity, she had to run home with Schmelly, his blood soaking her. He was in bad condition, so she immediately took him to the emergency room.
His injuries consist of deep puncture wounds to his stomach that went all the way through his abdominal wall, possibly puncturing his intestines and bladder, and deep puncture wounds to his shoulder. His skin was separated from his muscle. Finally, his spine was fractured and he has a few slipped discs.
All of this combined led to a critical emergency surgery, and even during the surgery they started losing him. To save his life they had to postpone the remainder of the surgery, but even with future treatment he may end up paralyzed.
He still needs to undergo specialty neurology visits for his fractured spine, an MRI, potential assistive devices, and possibly spinal surgery to save his life. All of these will only cost more money going forward, and the emotional toll of this experience has only been exacerbated by the financial burden caused by the high emergency vet bills and future specialist visits.
I don’t want my mom to have to suffer through this experience any more than she already has. This fund would go to her and Schmelly in its entirety to cover the past and ongoing medical expenses.
We just want to give him the best chance we possibly can while also keeping him as comfortable as possible while considering his quality of life. Any amount of help would be greatly appreciated from me and my family, even if you are only able to share the word about our stinky boy’s story. From my family to you, thank you for the support!
