SAVE SANKOFA THEATER

The Sankofa Theater is faced with the HARSH reality of potentially closing the theater's doors for good. As of 3/30/23 The Sankofa Theater has been given 60 days to “prove” to the Inscape Arts landlords that The Sankofa Theater can make the space a sustainable theater AND pay a $1,200 increase or leave. With The Sankofa Theater gone ; Inscape will tear down the space and build smaller studios to make $3,700/ mo in rent. This art space will be gone forever. This after countless hours, financial investment, community placemaking and sweat equity to bring a space that centers Black Excellence and Bipoc experiences to reality.

Over the last 16 months in the space, Teme Wokoma and Co-Founder Elijah L. Lewis had made it their mission to be key place makers here in Seattle,WA - a city that is increasingly leaving its cultural communities FORGOTTEN. Through opening The Sankofa Theater, the duo has been intentional in creating safe spaces for marginalized communities to thrive after suffering collectively through the Pandemic.

The Sankofa Theater has donated countless free hours for space to many individuals and organizations in the community, giving them a professional space to leverage their lived experiences, their art, and businesses.

The Sankofa Theater motto is; “What Can We Create Together” and by being FULLY TRANSPARENT, we are hoping WE can CREATE a future with The Sankofa Theater THRIVING.

We are raising $30,000 to sustain a year lease, pay our overhead and be able to hire a small team of employees to help run this much needed creative space in the growing art community at Inscape Arts and in the neighborhood.
