Save Rescued Animals in Morocco – Before It's Too Late

Hi, I’m Becky, and along with my friend Emma O’Callaghan, I’m fundraising for Ibtissam (Betty) and her animal rescue in Morocco. Right now, she and almost 300 dogs and cats are facing an urgent crisis—one that threatens their lives and the future of the shelter. This is where we need your help. Now more than ever.
The Heart of the Rescue:
In 2014, Ibtissam’s deep love for animals led her to open a dog hotel in Marrakech. But what started as a small business quickly became a sanctuary for abandoned animals. When clients began leaving their pets behind, Ibtissam couldn’t turn them away. Within two years, her small crew of four dogs and six cats grew to nearly 50. She knew she couldn’t just keep boarding animals—she needed to provide a permanent refuge.
And so, Help Adopt Moroccan Animals (HAMA) was born.
Ibtissam's mission has always been simple but critical:
- Prevent the spread of rabies in Morocco
- Vaccinate, spay, and neuter animals to control overpopulation
- Offer shelter to those who can't survive the streets: injured, senior, or unwanted animals
- Find loving homes for every animal that can be adopted
- End the suffering of animals on the streets
For years, Ibtissam’s rescue provided a safe haven and changed countless lives—both animal and human. But right now, everything is at risk.
The Urgency:
In 2023, the landlord of the shelter decided he no longer wanted a dog rescue on his property. Despite Ibtissam’s best efforts to negotiate, she was forced to evacuate. The access to water was also closed off, meaning this now needs to be bought rather than coming from the well she previously had access to. With no stable income and the cost of running the shelter becoming impossible to cover, Ibtissam sold her home and business to feed and care for the animals. But even that will only last so long. In Morocco, animal charities receive no help from the state.
Ibtissam’s rescue is one of the few places standing between these animals and a tragic end. If we don’t act now, their fate is sealed.
Why Your Help Is Critical:
This isn’t just about keeping a shelter open—this is about saving lives. Every day, Ibtissam cares for almost 300 dogs and cats who have nowhere else to go. These animals have already been abandoned, abused, or neglected—and they cannot survive on the streets.
Without your support, this sanctuary will close its doors. Ibtissam can no longer do it alone.
How You Can Help:
Ibtissam has poured everything into this shelter. In the short term, we need to raise £10,000 to ensure these animals can stay safe for one more month. Your donation will go directly towards:
- Shelter rent: Securing a new home for the rescue and keeping the animals safe from eviction.
- Wages for local workers: A dedicated team that cares for these animals every single day.
- Food, water and supplies: Ensuring these animals are fed and cared for.
- Veterinary care: Vaccinations, spay/neuter procedures, emergency medical treatments.
Without any emergencies, the cost of running the shelter for one month is 6,000 euros (approx £5,000).
The dream is of course to have a forever home for animals and place of healing and hope. But without immediate help, this won't be possible.
"I don't want to rely on donations forever", says Ibitssam. "One day I want to open the doors of the shelter to the public, not just for adoption, but to create a space where animals can heal, people learn and love replaces fear".

- £50 – Helps cover food, an annual vet check-up, flea and tick treatment, deworming, vaccines, grooming, and treats for one animal for a month (USD: $63.50 / EUR: €58.50)
- £100 – Contributes towards the shelter's rent for one month (USD: $127.00 / EUR: €117.00)
- £500 – Helps cover the cost of an animal’s annual vet care: check-up, vaccines, flea and tick treatment, deworming, and supplies (USD: $635.00 / EUR: €585.00)
