Rescate Animal Guatemala began in 2012 with a single puppy — just 3 months old — wandering alone in the streets. That moment sparked a mission: to help the most vulnerable animals who have no one else.
By 2015, that mission became a rescue and a refuge. Today, 40–50 rescued dogs call this place home. Many arrived injured, abandoned, and emotionally broken… but here, they’ve found something they never had before: safety, love, and a second chance.
But now, their home is at risk.
We’ve been informed that the property is being put up for sale. Before it goes to the market, we’ve been given a short window — just 2 months — to try to save it.
The cost is 2 million quetzales (approximately $260,000 USD).
And the truth is… rescues in Guatemala face incredibly difficult realities:
There is no government support for animal rescues. Donations are scarce and inconsistent, while many people complain about shelters instead of supporting them.
And in some heartbreaking cases, animals in the streets are poisoned or harmed simply for existing.
Adoptions in Guatemala are very limited. Many of our dogs only find families because we are able to send them to the United States.
This is the reality these dogs come from.
That’s why this shelter matters so much.
For 11 years, this has been a safe, stable place — away from danger, located in a secure area with access to veterinary care and adoption opportunities. Moving them to a rural or unsafe location is not an option. It would put their lives — and the lives of their caretakers — at serious risk.
If we lose this space… they lose everything.

Rescate Animal Guatemala nació en el año 2012 gracias a un pequeño perrito de apenas 3 meses que vagaba solo por las calles. Ese momento despertó una misión: ayudar a los animales más vulnerables, los que no tienen voz ni nadie que los defienda.
En el año 2015 logramos crear un refugio que hoy es el hogar de 40 a 50 perritos rescatados. Muchos llegaron heridos, abandonados y con miedo… pero aquí han encontrado algo que nunca habían tenido: amor, seguridad, estabilidad y una segunda oportunidad de vida.
Hoy, ese hogar está en peligro.
Nos han informado que la propiedad será puesta en venta, y nos han dado una oportunidad antes de salir al mercado. Tenemos solo 2 meses para reunir los fondos y poder conservar este lugar.
El valor es de 2 millones de quetzales (aproximadamente $260,000 dólares).
Y la realidad en Guatemala es muy dura para los rescates:
No existe apoyo del gobierno para los refugios. Las donaciones son muy limitadas o inexistentes y muchas personas se quejan de los rescates en lugar de apoyarlos.
Y en los casos más tristes, hay animales que son envenenados o lastimados simplemente por estar en la calle.
En Guatemala hay muy pocas adopciones. Muchos de nuestros rescatados han encontrado hogar únicamente porque hemos logrado enviarlos a Estados Unidos.
De esa realidad vienen estos perritos.
Por eso este refugio es tan importante.
Durante 11 años, este ha sido un lugar seguro — en una zona tranquila, sin conflictos con vecinos, con acceso a veterinarias y oportunidades de adopción. Mudarlos a una zona rural o insegura no es una opción, ya que pondría en riesgo sus vidas y la de quienes los cuidan.
Si perdemos este espacio… ellos lo pierden todo.
