Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers,
On the 25th of December 2023, my brother Omar (everybody calls him Que) was diagnosed with tongue cancer, with a suspicion of also having lung cancer. Starting from the 15th of January 2024, he began his first round of chemotherapy.
However, between those two dates, as a family and for the first time in our lives, we saw him—the one who's always full of energy and loves life so much (you can see him in the picture hugging the chemo pump as if it's his best friend)—unable to live. He could not eat or drink. He barely breathed, and it was painful to do so.
In the first round of chemotherapy, he had to stay in the hospital for 4 days. He said he'd never do it again as he can't live between walls and wants to be able to enjoy life outside.
The doctors said he had to do 3 rounds of chemotherapy and then an operation to remove the tumor. Between each round, there are 21 days. He doesn't eat at all until he gets the targeted therapy, then he could eat plain food without any taste, just like plain pasta. He eats enough to live because he can't stand it.
After the end of the 3rd round, the doctors said the tumor was still too big and that they had to cut 75% of his tongue, which meant he most probably wouldn't be able to speak.
He refused it strongly and believed that he would get through this without losing his tongue. He convinced the doctors to do 3 more rounds of chemotherapy, and they accepted it. However, the results were disappointing, and his tumor grew bigger on the other side of his tongue.
Having had 4 rounds of chemotherapy, the health insurance said it's not worth it to continue when there are no results and stopped. We paid for the 5th round voluntarily.
After being done with it, he went to another doctor in another city, and the doctor said that there is hope! Que needs to do chemotherapy and radiotherapy together because chemotherapy alone isn't enough.
The total cost of these rounds will be at least 10,000 Euros.
Radiotherapy: 5 times a week, costing 200 Euros each. That's 1,000 Euros a week for 7 weeks.
Chemotherapy: 1,000 Euros for each round. (We don't know yet how many of them Que needs.)
Family and friends have collected some money; however, it's only enough for half of it.
I want to raise money for my brother so that he can live normally again. His love for life brings me joy. Anyone who knows him knows that Que is the most loving, caring, and joyful person. Que deserves to live the best life, and he will, with our help.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for any support you can provide. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us and give Que the strength to keep fighting.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Abdelrahman (Azari) Youssef
