SAVE Program 2020 Summer Competition

This is a continuation of our previous fundraiser, which we're replacing.

Thus far, we've raised over $7,000 in contributions and pledges. We'd like to continue expanding the SAVE Program's reach and ability to fund bright young minds.

The COVID-19 pandemic marks the beginning of a new era. It is truly a once in a lifetime event in terms of how everything in the world came to an abrupt halt. Private industry and associated philanthropy have always been influential in finding innovative ways to solve new problems. For that reason, we believe that by reaching out to young, bright minds, and giving them the resources to make an impact, we as a society can see change on levels that we hadn't thought of.

Our goal is to find entrepreneurs that have created an idea that helps healthcare workers, especially vulnerable or disadvantaged communities, or mitigates the economic damages caused by COVID-19 and the resulting lockdowns. All pitches will be directly related to either suppressing the COVID-19 pandemic or the socioeconomic impacts stemming from it. A team of 3-5 students from each school will present their pitch via Zoom video call to a panel of judges composed of venture capitalists, financial consultants, hedge fund managers, and other experts in their fields. Each team will have someone working as a helping hand throughout the process, from brainstorming up to presentation, while maintaining confidentiality for each team; they will not share one team's ideas with other groups, or allude to those ideas when giving advice. This is going to help with the 'polish' of the presentation, and serves primarily to ensure that everyone is on top of their work. Furthermore, it gives teams an opportunity to get third-party advice, and convene online in a zoom call.

We're also going to encourage judges to communicate with other teams post-event as they see fit, so there's opportunity for growth among other contestants if the judges think they have an impressive idea.

Our judges include industry leaders. Please see everything we've accomplished at  our website, studentsagainstthevirus.org

We've completed our first competition, and you can see the three winners which your contributions will be funding on our website. They are all student-run. In first place is Stem4Free , a food rescue 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In second place is Bass Handcrafted Sanitizers & Co. , a charitable business run in Tokyo, Japan which deals in hand sanitizers. In third place is Information Across Language NJ [New Jersey], which aims to provide up-to-date information on the COVID-19 Pandemic in all of New Jersey's major languages.
