Save Portia Fund

Portia is a life saver! MY lifesaver. She is my service dog and since coming into my life 3+ years ago she has helped me to overcome and manage symptoms of PTSD (a little something I picked up along my own health journey).

In the midst of this Covid-19 pandemic, on March 6th, Portia was diagnosed with K9 Mammary Carcinoma. That's right, my SD, needed to help me battle cancer, now has her own battle to wage.

There is an excellent surgical oncologist here in Ottawa (only 1 of 3 in Canada if you can believe it!). I have faith in Dr. Julius Liptak's abilities to help Portia, but the surgery he is proposing will be extensive, and costly.

I find it difficult to ask for help, especially of the monetary variety, but being on a fixed income has made this a necessity for me.

So, in exchange for donations, I will send to you two homemade, pandemic masks, to help ease your worried mind as this virus continues to ravage our communities. Its not much, just a way to say thank you and to keep you healthy!

A little about Portia

For several years, after being diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer in 2012, I knew I had some form of PTSD .  I was angry all the time and oh-so sleep deprived. I could not fall asleep or stay asleep. I was terrified I would not wake up. I lived like this for 3 years, before I finally went to my physician for help. He concurred with my self-diagnosis and signed the necessary paperwork authorizing the use of a service dog (SD).

Coincidentally, a good friend of mine knew of a well-trained, field trial champion and breeder who was due for retirement and looking for her third career and forever home.  I arranged to meet Power at her home in Mallorytown, Ont. She was smaller than the average Vizsla, but oh so pretty. The owner of the kennel knew my story and agreed to gift her to me.  So after 6 years of living in a kennel as top dog (or head bitch), she was on to her next adventure.

I was so thankful and Power was the ideal fit--except for that name! Power became Portia and we soon set about training her for SD work. She proved to be the smartest dog I had ever worked with.

She is smart, silly, sporty, and snuggley--all the things I need.  She forces me to get outside and walk/hike, she makes me laugh every day, and from the moment she came home, I knew we had rescued each other. From that first moment she climbed onto the bed, I have slept so much better, which is essential for my ongoing health and mental state.

I know times are tough. Any little donation will help. I appreciate your care and your assistance.

Be sure to send me an address so I can send you masks.

Thank you!

PS -- don't forget to spay your girls! Dogs spayed after their second heat have a 25% increased chance of mammary cancer!
