Since 1958, the Pennypack Woods Swim Club has been a mainstay of our neighborhood. PWSC is currently in its 62nd season. Many original members, who were kids themselves when PWSC first opened, are now enjoying the swim club with their grandchildren. In many cases, a 3rd generation of families are spending their days at PWSC. Through the decades, kids came to this pool to learn how to swim, make new friends and celebrate the joys of summer as only children can. Who doesn’t remember the excitement of jumping in the freezing cold pool on the 1st day of Memorial Day weekend?
PWSC was the first place of employment for so many people growing up in this community. Whether it was the snack bar, Gatehouse or being a Lifeguard, many people learned their work ethic from PWSC. Many started out sweating their summer days in the snack bar only to upgrade the next season to become a Lifeguard. This season we had many kids who were 2nd generation employees who followed in their parent's footsteps. Anyone who ever was employed at PWSC will probably say that it was the best job they ever had!!!
It was here, as members of PWSC’s swim team, that kids learned the value of teamwork, the rewards of hard work, and felt their spirits lifted as crowds cheered for them whether they were in first place or struggling to finish last. Adults of all ages came as well. We had water ballets and to enormous 4th of July celebrations where many kids were sent to “wait in line” at 8a.m. to guarantee their family had a table to the famous Baby parades! Even sitting on “the Bench” became a favorite of memory for many as whatever the reason you got “benched”, it meant that you had fun in the process While basking in the sun, members were able to catch-up with neighbors, enjoy quality family time, or just simply relax in their own personal paradise. Hundreds of birthday parties have been had here at the PWSC pool as have graduation parties, retirement celebrations, and even engagements! However, the sun may be setting on all the pool has to offer…………….
Our beloved pool, the place that has given us so much joy over the years and decades, needs our help if it is to open again in the condition where it is functioning safely. Due to age and unforeseen circumstances, thousands of dollars are needed to upgrade and repair the pool if it is to ever operate again as it once was. Some of the repairs needed are:
· Two new lifeguard stands that are over 25 years old (installed in 1992).
· New electrical work to assure that the pool is properly grounded and up-to-code.
· New concrete work throughout the club.
· Repair leaks in baby pool. New pipes needed in baby pool as current ones are rotting due to age. The baby pool loses 75% of it’s water on a daily basis.
· Sandblast, seal and paint both pools. Big pool was quoted at 32K in 2014.
· Repair cracks in big pool.
· Upgrades to bathrooms are needed as well (new showers, new tile in showers, new floors, new stalls in men's room).
· Repairs to the pit area to stop leak. New valves needed. Must be done in April 2021.
· Repave the basketball courts for new blacktop that is crack-free and not a tripping hazard.
· New basketball poles and nets for the kids.
You can see this will be a HUGE undertaking but it is worth it for our children and future generations of PWHOA residents and their families. These are just some of the big-ticket items on the “wish list” that are needed to keep the pool functioning in a safe manner.
We are hoping that all our members, past and present, can contribute something to prevent PWSC’s closing and help bring it back to its glory. It is our hope that your friends and family, who have no doubt heard the stories about summers of the past or enjoyed reminiscing though old pictures of lazy days spent at PWSC, will help as well. We know that anyone that has seen the joy of any child in the summer will reach out and help keep this gem in our neighborhood!
No contribution is too small, and all you can do to support the PWSC will be appreciated by the children, board, and our neighbors for years to come. It is our hope that PWSC can celebrate many more milestones so that future generations can have the opportunity to make memories that will last them a lifetime! We invite you to come visit us before the Summer of 2020 is over as you can always come “home”!
