Paprika may be my dog, but she is also my family and my support system. She has supported me through difficult break-ups, moving across the country, terrible anxiety attacks, leaving an abusive boyfriend, and keeping me in the light when my life was so very dark. She's what keeps me going when I feel like I need to give up hope, my fluffy white light at the end of the tunnel. I can honestly say I would not be here without her.
These last few weeks have been some of the most challenging in my life. Paprika, my baby, the light of my life started to seem tired and lethargic. She did not seem her normal perky and sassy self. I watched her like a hawk and slowly over the next few days symptoms started to progress. She did not want to eat. Not deli turkey, treats, or her absolute favorite, string cheese. I knew something was seriously wrong when she let me trim her toe nails without pulling her paw back.
The next morning we brought her to the emergency vet. After 8 hours of waiting and numerous tests they determined it most likely was a tick borne illness or possibly cancer. With tears in my eyes I hospitalized her that night to start her right away on IV doxycycline. After two nights in the hospital her platelet levels seemed to be getting better and she was cleared for discharge.
At this point I was jumping up and down crying because she was getting better! My prayers were working! By the end of last week her platelet levels were over 300,000 and we seemed to be on a positive trajectory.
This past weekend we brought her in because she didn't want to eat again. After re-doing her blood work they noticed a very concerning spike in her liver levels. While rare, the vet explained some dogs can have an adverse reaction to the doxycycline causing liver problems. We immediately changed her antibiotics and added some anti nausea and entyce to help her eat.
The last two days I've brought her back for re-testing her liver. Things are not improving. The vet said they would have expected to see her levels get better with the change of antibiotics but it is getting progressively worse.
Tonight through more tears and pain I had to hospitalize Paprika again. They worry with her liver where its at she may have leptospirosis. They started the tests but it can take a few days. She needed to start treatment now before it's too late. Tomorrow I hope to meet with an internal medicine specialist to talk over a long term care plan. I may need to move her to the U of M if all options become exhausted at the current vet.
I am tired, sick, and emotionally exhausted but I will do whatever it takes to make her better including draining all my savings and taking out loans. So far expenses have been over $7,000 and they continue to add up. I do not often ask for help, but I need help. I have no expectations for anyone, she's not your dog. But as a fellow dog lover, I plead to everyone from the bottom of my heart please help me. If you cannot donate please pray. I may not be religious, but I will pray every second of everyday if it might help.
Please help me save Paprika like she's saved me, I owe her my life.
