In den letzten Tagen und Wochen hat sich unsere Arbeit abrupt verändert. Anstelle von Planung und Umsetzung eines umfangreichen Kulturprogramms für 2024 und 2025 steht uns nun unmittelbar der Entzug der jährlichen Förderung in Höhe von 1 Mio. €, die wir benötigen, um unserem 32-köpfigen Team einen Lohn zahlen zu können, und die damit verbundene Schließung bevor.
Am 20.11.2023 haben wir nur zufällig, über den Livestream der Kulturausschusssitzung, erfahren, dass Berlins Kultursenator Joe Chialo (CDU) das Oyoun binnen 5 Wochen schließen wird und wir unseren Community Space in der Lucy-Lameck-Str. räumen müssen.
Unsere direkt nach der Ausschusssitzung mitgeteilte Bitte um Akteneinsicht blieb bis heute unbeantwortet und es herrscht eine grundsätzliche Ablehnung zum konstruktiven Dialog seitens des Kultursenats. Unser juristische Gutachten von Myrsini Laaser (Anwältin für Straf- und Migrationsrecht) deutet jedoch darauf hin, dass es sich bei unserer 4-jährigen Projektförderung (2022-2025) um eine verbindliche Zusage handelt und die Förderung im Dezember 2023 nicht ausläuft. Wir sind zuversichtlich und werden uns gegen diese willkürliche Entscheidung verteidigen.
Dafür sind wir jetzt auf Eure Unterstützung angewiesen, um zumindest die hohen Anwalts- und Gerichtskosten zu bewältigen, die vor uns liegen. Eure Unterstützung bedeutet nicht nur, den Kampf um die Existenz des Oyoun zu fördern, sondern steht auch für den Schutz der Meinungs- und Kunstfreiheit in Deutschland. Jeder Beitrag, sei er groß oder klein, macht einen Unterschied. Der Senat versucht ein Exempel an uns zu statuieren und damit ein langfristiges Zeichen für die zukünftige Kulturpolitik zu setzen. Wir werden dem für uns alle entgegentreten und die Einhaltung der Gesetze einfordern.
Gemeinsam können wir zeigen, dass unsere #Oyounity als Gemeinschaft stark genug ist, um sich gegen willkürliche Entscheidungen der Berliner Kulturpolitik zur Wehr zu setzen.
Jeder Euro, den ihr spendet, fließt direkt in die notwendigen rechtlichen Schritte, die wir unternehmen müssen. Lasst uns gemeinsam für die Zukunft von Oyoun kämpfen und sicherstellen, dass die Stimmen der Vielen nicht verstummen.
Viele von euch haben gefragt, wie ihr uns am besten helfen könnt: Hier kommt eine konkrete Maßnahme. Wer selbst nicht in der Lage ist zu spenden, kann mit Freund*innen und Bekannten über die Ereignisse sprechen, unseren Kanälen folgen und diese Kampagne teilen.
// Was bisher geschah:
Der Senat hat am 06.11.2023 in einer Kulturausschusssitzung ausgesprochene Drohungen wahr gemacht und am 20.11.2023 das Ende der Förderung von Oyoun bis zum Jahresende bekannt gegeben. Dies steht entgegen einer Zusage der Förderung, die uns bis mindestens Ende 2025 zugesichert wurde. Als Grund dafür wird eine Gastveranstaltung vom 4. November genannt, eine Trauerfeier, die die "Jüdische Stimme für einen gerechten Frieden in Nahost" an besagtem Abend abgehalten hat. Dieses Event, und dadurch auch das Oyoun, wurde mit dem Label "versteckter Antisemitismus" belegt, ohne dass wir – trotz mehrfacher Nachfrage – solide Gründe erhalten haben oder je eine Untersuchung dieser Vorwürfe durchgeführt wurde.
Diese Entscheidung hat weitreichende Auswirkungen. Über 30 Personen, Beschäftigte und Fellows, verlieren in kürzester Zeit ihre Jobs. In manchen Fällen damit einhergehend auch ihre Aufenthaltserlaubnis.
In nur fünf Wochen müssen wir das 3.800qm große Haus in der Lucy-Lameck-Straße räumen, um Platz für ein neues, noch zu bestimmendes Konzept zu schaffen.
Das und die Aussicht, dass das Haus für einen unbestimmten Zeitraum leer stehen wird, ist belastend und untragbar.

Diese Veränderungen bedeuten nicht nur das Ende von Arbeitsplätzen, sondern auch das Schließen von Räumen der kulturellen Teilhabe. Gemeinschaften, die oft aus institutionell geförderten Kontexten ausgeschlossen sind, müssen sich in der aktuellen, feindlich agierenden Kulturlandschaft Berlins neu organisieren.
Diese Entscheidung ist nicht nur ein Rückschlag für Oyoun, sondern auch ein Weckruf für die Meinungsfreiheit und kulturelle Vielfalt über Oyoun hinaus – in Berlin und ganz Deutschland.
Die Anschuldigungen betreffen die gesamte, sehr vielfältige Community. Es ist wichtiger denn je, jetzt zusammenzustehen, um gegen unbegründete Vorwürfe anzukämpfen. Unsere kuratorische Arbeit ist durch kulturelle Vielfalt, Zusammenarbeit und das Streben nach Meinungsfreiheit geprägt.
Unsere Stärke liegt darin, zu zeigen, dass unterschiedliche Stimmen zusammenkommen müssen, um einen demokratischen Erkenntnisgewinn zu erzielen. Eure Unterstützung gibt uns die Kraft, den Herausforderungen zu begegnen, denen wir gegenüberstehen. Ihr zeigt uns und anderen, wie wichtig Oyoun für Berlin ist.

Over the last days and weeks our work has changed abruptly. Instead of planning and implementing an extensive cultural programme for 2024 and 2025, we are now facing the immediate withdrawal of the €1 million in annual funding, which we need to pay our 32-strong team a salary, and the consequential closure of Oyoun.
On 20 November 2023, we only found out by chance, via the livestream of the cultural committee meeting, that Berlin's Senator for Culture Joe Chialo (CDU) was going to close Oyoun and that we would have to vacate our community space in Lucy-Lameck-Str. within five weeks.
Our request for access to the files, which was communicated directly after the committee meeting, has remained unanswered to this day and there is a fundamental rejection of constructive dialogue on the part of the Senate of Culture. However, the legal report by Myrsini Laaser (lawyer for criminal and migration law) indicates that our 4-year project funding (2022-2025) is a binding commitment and that the funding will not expire in December 2023. We are confident and will defend ourselves against this arbitrary decision.
We are now dependent on your support in order to at least cope with the high legal and court fees that lie ahead of us. Your support not only means supporting the fight for the existence of Oyoun, but also stands for the protection of freedom of expression and artistic freedom in Germany. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference. The Senate is trying to make an example of us and thus set a long-term negative perspective for future cultural policy. We will challenge this, for all of us, and demand compliance with the law.
Together we can show that our #Oyounity as an international community is strong enough to defend itself against the arbitrary decisions of Berlin's cultural policy representatives.

// What has happened so far:
On 20 November 2023, the Senate followed through with threats made at a meeting of the Culture Committee on 6 November 2023 and announced that Oyoun's funding would come to a halt at the end of this year. This is contrary to a promise of funding that we were assured until at least the end of 2025. The reason given for this is a guest event on the evening of 4 November, a memorial service held by the "Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East". This event, and by extension Oyoun, was labelled with "hidden antisemitism" without us being given solid reasons - despite repeated requests - or an investigation into the allegations ever being carried out.
This decision has far-reaching consequences. Over 30 people, employees and fellows, will lose their jobs in a very short space of time. In some cases, this also means losing their residence permit.
In just five weeks, we will have to vacate the 3,800 square metre building in Lucy-Lameck-Straße to make room for a new, yet-to-be-determined concept.
This and the prospect that the building will remain empty for an indefinite period of time is stressful and unbearable.

These changes not only signify the loss of jobs, but also the closure of spaces for cultural participation. Communities that are often excluded from institutionally financed cultural contexts must reorganise themselves in Berlin's current hostile cultural landscape.
This decision is not only a setback for Oyoun, but also a wake-up call for freedom of expression and cultural diversity beyond Oyoun - in Berlin and across Germany.
The accusations affect the entire, very diverse community. It is more important than ever to stand together now to fight against unfounded accusations. Our curatorial work is characterised by cultural diversity, collaboration and the pursuit of freedom of expression.
Our strength lies in showing that different voices must come together to achieve a democratic gain in knowledge. Your support gives us the strength to face the challenges we are confronted with. You show us and others how important Oyoun is for Berlin.
